Rickey Shay:  

After graduation, Rick did odd jobs until Dec '82 when he became a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, serving in Spain. In Jun '84, after successfully finishing his time as a missionary, he returned home and worked in an office and went to night school at MHCC. In Mar '85, Rick decided to join the Air Force after being layed-off at his office job. In April he was at Basic Military Training at Lackland AFB in San Antonio TX. In June he was at Keesler AFB, in Biloxi MS, for a HR Technician course. In Aug '85, after completing the HR Technician course, he went on leave to Cadiz, Spain, to visit Toni (who would become his wife). They were just friends but by the time the visit was over, they were engaged. After getting an extra week of borrowed leave, Rick had to report back to Keesler AFB in Biloxi. He had been assigned to the HR office there. It took over a year to get all the immigration paperwork ready for Toni to come to the US. On 3 Nov '86 we were married in Gibraltar (about 2 hours away from Toni's home in Spain). They went back to Biloxi only to find out that they were going to be reassigned to Torrejon Air Base, just outside Madrid, Spain. They lived in Madrid from Mar '87 to Mar '91. Their oldest son, Ken, was born in Madrid, at the base hospital. From there they went to the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center in Monterey CA. Rick was the Air Force Registrar there and worked special HR actions (disciplinary issues and discharges) from Apr '91 to May '94. Toni learned a lot of English at her first job in the States, working evenings at Little Caesars Pizza. Their 2nd son, Carlos, was born in Salinas CA. In Jun '94 they moved to Geilenkirchen, Germany. Rick worked as a HR Technician job with NATO AWACS. Toni worked at the school cafeteria at AFCENT (now AFNORTH) just across the border in the Nethe...Expand for more
