Rick's Story

Life I earned an AA degree at Brevard Communicty College, then received a BA in fine art photography from UCF in Orlando. Moved to California and worked at California Polytechnic State University for 25 years as head of a division that produced professional films and videos. I had one series picked up by National PBS and The History Channel. In 1997 I started my own video production and photography company. In 2004 I completed an animated TV special for Christmas, 2004: "Davey & Goliath's Snowboard Christmas." It airs annually on the Hallmark Channel during the Christmas season. One of my main, on-going projects is promoting a DVD I produced about Patrick Smith, a Florida writer, who happens to be my father. It is pretty easy to find on the web. I went to the Tupelo Film Festival in May, 2005 and won the top award for this film. It also won a Telly Award in May, 2005. It is receiving good reviews all over Florida. I'm shot a "thriller/zombie" b-movie in 2006, and in 2006...Expand for more
I just shot a film for the LeLand Stanford Mansion in Sacramento. That's where our "governator" (Arnold) holds state affairs. It is also a state park. We won two awards for the film, a historical drama. As you can tell, I stay busy. Technically, I "retired" from Cal Poly, but I've never worked so hard or so many hours. But I enjoy my work, so that's OK. I doubt if I'll ever really retire until my health gives out. I just enjoy doing creative things too much. Seems like I'm a late bloomer, since I'm just now getting to do all of the things I wanted to do in my 20s. I live in a beautiful little town called Cambria, on the coast between San Francisco and Los Angeles. The only reason you might have heard of it is that it is at the bottom end of the Big Sur Coast, where William Randolf Hearst's "Castle" is. It is a hilly, pine forest that meets the sea at a rocky coast. Very beautiful. Best wishes to all who stop here to read this. I hope to see you around... Rick Smith
