Rita's Story
Life
Since High Point? Wait, first of all, why can't people believe that we had a really nice group of kids? Was I so oblivious that I didn't see meanness, in-groups and out-groups, just people? Yes, we had our close circles of friends, then acquaintances, classmates, hellos in the hallways...but I just don't remember ugly behavior.
Who did I have a crush on? Mr. Trumble, our physics teacher!!! Wasn't he great?
I also have a blurry memory of 7th grade, when we had the Jr/Sr high school before Rollingcrest and Buck Lodge were built. I had a very cute, blond, male math teacher, Mr. Weisenbord. I was talking to a classmate, naturally, and he slammed his pointer down on the nearest desk, and said, "Woman, hush your mouth!"
I sad there, dazed, thrilled, thinking, "He called me woman, he called me woman!."
Moving along, at 18, I went straight to U of MD where I majored in early childhood ed. What fun to cross the campus during class break and say "hi" every minute because of knowing so many people from HP, Blair, even Northwestern. I didn't know then that I had ADD, and concentrating on my studies was always hard for me. Discussions were easy, though, and that is why my high school teachers told my parents that I should be getting straight A's. What were they talking about? I told my parents that the teachers just didn't understand what was difficult for me.
I remember being grounded in high school in order to bring my grades up. Well, that did a lot of good. I'd daydream on weeknights whether I had a Saturday night date or not. Dream about the date I had or the date I did not...no difference.
My first teaching experience was traumatic. The planning overwhelmed me, so I returned to school to get my art certification. That was a wonderful decision. I taught in Frederick County, in Middletown, loved the rural kids, and later quit to raise my two children.
Evan was born in 1969, and Deborah in 1971. Woodstock?, people ask me. Nope, I was a suburban housewife by then. Raised the kids in Gaithersburg, and was very active in B'nai B'rith Women. Volunteered with underprivileged, battered women, Special Olympics, and got into public affairs. Tried to get the equal rights amendment passed, rid of us the electoral college (good luck!) and lobby for human rights.

rced, I subbed in Montgomery County schools, worked for CIA, and then was dragged, kicking and screaming, to New Jersey to marry Brooklynite, Richard Sohn. There I tried real estate (big mistake) and went back to teaching elementary art (hooray!!) Loved that very much. We had a house in the woods, in Bergen County, in Oakland, NJ. Richard's sons, Ian and David, are living in Australia and Rochester
The move to NJ was so much more difficult in 1984 than my recent move to Ohio in 2004. With e-mail and 24-7 long distance phone calling, I can keep in touch with so many.
I love Ohio, the mid-west friendly, art-loving, beautiful Pepper Pike. I have woods again, and a house that looks like a Frank Lloyd-Wright inspired design. I feel that I'm in the woods while indoors. Walls of glass, and stone, and sky lights.
Now I have a business: Drawing on the World, and I teach drawing in my sun room. The kids come to me and I don't need to worry about the snow. Snow? Oh, yes,! Lake Effect Snow...very often, not usually a lot at a time, and light and dusty. I am in La-la-Land!!!
I live among the deer, dig in the dirt planting flowers, spray to make the flowers taste bad to the deer.
My Maryland and Virginia children want us to move back to DC. I told them that while I'm living in Hot Flash City, moving South is not an option.
We have 3 wonderful grandchildren, born in '04, '06 & '07, with another on the way. What an incredible joy they are!
We have spare bedrooms for guests and love company.
That is, when we're not out of town attending the many family functions in Maryland, New York, and elsewhere. When everyone you know is far away, it is hard to stay home.
My husband enjoys his huge wood shop and is planning a large coffee table to house his collection of fossils. Richard and I both love living here, and take day trips to Pittsburgh and just love exploring. We're so glad that the price of gas has returned from the scary prices of 2008.
I volunteer in community service and social advocacy with National Council of Jewish Women. I've made so many friends here...that's what happens when one become active.
Does anyone know how to reach Harriet Beck Gordon? I hate to lose old friends who were connected by our parents.
Be healthy and stay in touch,
Rita
