Robert "bob"'s Story
Life
After High School, I went through that "partying period" many of us went through in the late 70's and early 80's, mine lasted nine years, though I managed to complete a two year Associates Degree at Marion Tech, plus I held a steady full time job through that entire period. In fact, the only time in my adult life that I have been unemployed for any length of time was just after I cleaned up my act in '86. Then I became a portrait photographer. Photography was a hobby of mine before that, now it's just my career. I've had many addresses over the years due to that career: Findlay, OH; Cambridge,OH; Interlochen, MI; St. John's, MI; Saginaw, MI; Buckeye Lake, OH; and back to Findlay, OH, where I now reside, not to mention the thousands of motel rooms. Sandwiched in between Interlochen and Buckeye Lake is a seven year marriage that netted two wonderful boys, Sean and Nathan, before ending in divorce in '03. So, that is my life, to put it briefly, to this point. If my stocks hold up, I hope to retire in another nine to twelve years, and I plan to stay single. One marriage was enough, I've always been kind of a loner anyway. Romance is not out of the question, but anything more than that probably is. UPDATE (2016): My, how things can change. In 2011, I was reunited with an old flame. We fell in love all over again and are still going strong. Five years now and still haven't even had a fight. I guess romance wasn't out of the question after all. We're looking forward to seeing the beauties of this country we all live in when I retire. UPDATE (2021) Finally retired in 2019 and enjoying my hobbies and sharing life with the same old flame I mentioned in 2016. We took a trip to Colorado and Utah in 2019 and a second trip has been postponed because of....you guessed it....COVID19. Both fully vaccinated now and eager to take another trip. If you haven't done so yet, please, everyone, get vaccinated and be part of the solution, no matter what your political persuasion. It is NOT a political decision folks. It is a decision of the life and death of not only you but every person you come in contact with.
School
High School Memories: getting 4 birds in the '75 yearbook..."Toke", the underground newspaper my Sophomore year(74-75).....T.C. setting fire to all the toilet seats in the north john, it was closed for repairs for two weeks.....Jim Duncan being elected Sr.Class President as a write-in candidate via a "Toke" endorsement(74-75).....smoking in the boys room......skipping P.E. and hanging out in Mr. Schram's office.......two ten day suspensions my Junior year for smoking in the boys room (it would have been three had a certain faculty member turned me in...Thanks "Frank")....going up the "down" staircase, I did it every day, much to Mr. Kennedy's dismay....."Ozzy" Osborne telling me to get my hair cut...I n...Expand for more
ever did, I just put it in a ponytail until the heat was off, usually about 15 minutes....the "Shoot the Moon" issue of "Toke", for which Dan F. was disciplined for reading pornography (there was a picture on the front page of a bunch of guys "shooting the moon", no privates were showing, just bare asses) this was not pornography...the fictional story on page 3 may have been though, "Roach" did have a way of telling some colorful, and occasionally, borderline pornographic stories.......a few of you may remember all the contraband in my locker, ha! ha!..nothing illegal mind you, just against the school rules, after all, going against the school rules was so "in" then.......I was such a bad boy, in a subversive kind of way, but hey,I do remember some positive things too.......the 74-75 football team beating Carey, the 74-75 state champions......Oklahoma.......Dan Michael was a good friend......I got straight "A's in Band, which I dropped for my Senior year, I took Music Appreciation instead, I got straight "A's" in that too!.......I didn't flunk my Sophomore year, that is positive, and a miracle! I had fun though......Also, from 1971, through 1975, I was a member of the Marion Cadets Drum & Bugle Corps, playing lead Soprano bugle for four years, and Flugal horn my final year. This experience more than anything else shaped me into the person I am today, and was probably the happiest period of my life.
College
From Fall qtr. of '79 through Spring qtr. of '82, I attended Marion Tech part-time taking evening classes, earning an Associates Degree in Accounting. I never became an accountant though. Most of my professors were accountants who taught part time. They all seemed very high strung and had nervous tics and the like.....I decided that wasn't for me. The college experience was valuable to me though. It was probably the first time in my life that I applied myself seriously towards making good grades. I graduated high school with a low "C" average, and college with a high "B" average. I think it boosted my self-confidence just a little.
Workplace
I have been a portrait photographer since Oct. 1986. I am currently working for Olan Mills shooting primarily church directories. My territory is northwest Ohio, and I occasionally go into Indiana and Michigan. Most of my assignments are commutable from Findlay where I now make my home. UPDATE (2016): Still in NW Ohio but Olan Mills was bought by Lifetouch so income is down, but retirement is a year-and-a-half away. Barring anything unforeseen, I will stick it out and retire form this business in March of 2018.
Military
I easily managed to avoid this......not for me!!! Kudos to those of you who did serve though, you have my respect.
Update 2022:
Retired in 2018 and doing well. Does anybody out there know where I might find a copy of the 1975 Shield?
