Robert's Story

Life Attended Scottsbluff College, joined US Army in 1964. Assigned to US Army Security Agency Military Intelligence Cryptanalysis school 1964. Assigned Ft Wolters, TX 1965. Assigned Viet-Nam 1966. Remained in RVN until discharge (as Staff Sgt E-6) Nov 68 (4 1/2 yrs svc). Rtnd RVN as State Dept civilian Feb 69. Assigned Advisory Team 89 in Phuoc-Tuy Province until 1972. I read, write, and speak Vietnamese fairly well. No longer fluent. Rtnd USA 1972. Married in RVN 1968. Three children (1970, 1971, 1977). Joined real estate management company 1972. Still there. Now serving as Senior Vice President, Director of Property Management. All three children grown, completed college, two in NY City and one in Damascus, MD. Still married & my wife (Lan) and I are looking forward to retirement soon. Two granddaughters (1997 & 2000). Workplace Update: Retired August 7, 2004. Preparing to move from Maryland to somewhere in the western U.S. (probably Oklahoma) within a few months. Military Enlisted U. S. Army June, 1964. Basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri June 1, 1964 to August 7, 1964. Attended US Army Security Agency Military Crytptanalysis course & basic traffic analysis course at Fort Devens, Massachusetts from August, to April, 1965. Tough course. 9 of original class of 164 were graduated. Assigned to Headquarters Company, 303d Army Security Agency Battalion (Corps), Fort Wolters, Texas (April, 1965 to April...Expand for more
, 1966). Battalion sent to Viet-Nam April, 1966. Most of our company travelled by troop ship. I was one of the nine person advance party and travelled by C-130 and C-123 transport aircraft. I was promoted to Specialist Four (E-4) in late 1965. Promoted to Specialist Five (E-5) in April, 1966. Converted to Sergeant (E-5) later in 1966. Promoted to Staff Sergeant (E-6) in mid-1968. Remained with the company until November, 1968 which was almost 6 months past the intended term of my 4 year enlistment (voluntarily). Boarded and approved for OCS twice. The first time all orders were cancelled when we received orders for overseas movement from Texas. The second time I decided to leave the Army and marry a foreign national. I had orders for Engineer OCS at Fort Belvoir, Virginia voided and accepted discharge in late Nov, 1968. While in Viet-Nam in uniform for over two and half years I lived through the Tet offensive. I received following decorations: Bronze Star Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Presidential Unit Citation, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal with 9 campaign stars. I qualified with the following weapons: M-60 machine gun, M-14 Rifle, .45 semi-automatic pistol, & .38 revolver. I liked and and intended to make a career of the Army. However, I met a young Vietnamese girl and decided to get married and forget the military career. Still married. No regrets.
