Robert's Story

Robert Daraio, Our Lady of Mercy 1960-64, Ridge Street School 1965-69, Archbishop Stepinac HS 1969-73,SUNY Purchase, BFA Theater Tech,1977, CUNY SPS MA Labor Studies 2011, spent the summers during his SUNY Purchase years traveling with "The Circus Kingdom", a youth circus program run by Rev. L. David Harris made up of college students from across the U.S.A. including fellow Purchase students Jessie Hentoff, Lenny Wright, Woody Davis, and Margie Wood. The show toured throughout the U.S. and Canada each season. During his senior year at Purchase, Bob founded "The No Elephant Circus". TNEC operated under the Actor's Equity Association Theater For Young Audience contract from 1977 to 1990, touring an average of 126 cities in 15 States annually. Bob joined Tribune’s flagship television station, WPIX, as a master control Technical Director and Video Engineer on June 1,1999 and retired June 1, 2010. This was Bob’s first staff position following a 22-year career as a freelance camera, robotics, video, audio, and videotape technician. His news, sports, and entertainment clients include CBS, NBC, FOX5, TBS, ABC, UPN9, WPIX, WNET, MSG, CNN, CNNfn, HBO, Showtime, MTV, VH1, CTW, NEP, Unitel, MTI, ESPN, and the National Geographic Society. In 2002 the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences honored Bob for his video and robotic camera work on the Emmy Award winning “The WB11 News At 10”, now "The CW11 News At 10". Bob has been a video assist technician for hundreds of television commercials and coordinated video effects for feature films including the Rozie Perez and Patti Lupone independent film, “24 Hour Woman” and “For Love Of The Game” with Kevin Costner for Universal Pictures. Bob took a Job as Mobilization Coordinator at The Newspaper Guild of New York, CWA Local 31003 in February 2012 and in August 2012 became a Local Representative of the Guild, currently representing workers at Consumer Reports; WPIX, The Nation, Scholastic, Inc., Standard & Poor's, Foreign Policy Association, The Forward, JTA, The Norwalk Hour, Hudson News, and The Jersey Journal. Bob retired March 31, 2018. As a trade unionist, Bob serves on the New York City Central Labor Council of the AFL/CIO, the Westchester Putnam Central Labor Body. Bob has served on the Executive Boards of the National Association of Broadcast Employees and Technicians (NABET) Local 15, the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE) Locals 644 and 600, and was a Shop Steward of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local 1212 at WPIX. Bob is one of an elite few who have held leadership positions in all three of New York’s film, television, and theatrical technical employee unions. Bob is serving his second term as an elected member of the Board of Trustees and Police Commissioners of the Village of Ossining, New York, where he lives with his wife Gayle, a theatrical wardrobe supervisor for Broadway shows and member of IATSE Local 764. Bob is also a Fire Police Officer with Rescue 14 of the Village of Ossining volunteer Fire Department. Bob is a member of Flotilla 16-07 U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, a U.S. Coast Guard Licensed Master of Near Coastal 50 Ton Vessels with Commercial Towing and Sail Endorsements and a Coast Guard Certified Port Engineer. Bob is a member of the National Association of Charterboat Operators (NACO);The American Professional Captains Association (APCA); IATSE Locals 1, 52, 600, and 794; NABET Locals 11 and 16; IBEW Local 1212; AEA; AFTRA, NATAS, and SMPTE.
