Bob's Story
Life
I have a daughter, Ryan Leigh (20), and a son, Colin Andrew (17). Both are too smart for their own good.
Ryan will be continuing her studies at UCONN this fall, and Colin just graduated from high school and wants to go to college. He still wants to balance being a student with being a professional gamer.
I've been married for the past 22 years to Lynn, and it amazes me... We made a couple of great kids, and that was a good start!
I've been playing guitar for the past 24 years, and singing since I was a kid. I wish I could do THAT for living, though I wonder if 47-48 is too late to start a career in music. It's fulfilling to play for others, and even better when I'm well-received!
I'm hoping to return to snowboarding this year. I've been rehabbing my injuries and find myself very healthy again, and I've lost half the weight toward my goal.
I tried out for the Olympics in 1988 and qualified for the Greco-Roman Wrestling ladder trials. I had the flu during the competition and got my butt handed to me during the Freestyle tournament. All in all, it was a pivotal experience for me. I kept wrestling competitively until I was 38. It was a great run.
I earned my degree in Mathematics at Central Connecticut State University and specialized in Operations Research. Continuous Improvement just became a natural extension of my interest in messing with things to make them better, so that's the direction I've taken. I did toy around with designing Point-of-Purchase displays for about 4 years. It was a great experience, but a little too neurotic for me, so as I said before, I'm back into m...Expand for more
y old digs in Quality and Aerospace.
Workplace
I'm back at Pratt & Whitney, and it feels like home. My return in July of 2007 was a great experience for me. I was able to reconnect with some old friends and colleagues (one of the FIRST things I did when I returned), and took a little time to get my "sea-legs" back. Man... I forgot how many acronyms they use there.
So I work in East Hartford in the F119/F135 engine programs working on hot-section elements of the engines. It's great work that keeps me on the curve of constantly improving the design of those elements. I still love the people and the challenges!
Military
I had an unremarkable military career in the US Navy. I was an Electronics Technician who ultimately served aboard the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN-69).
We were dispatched to the Mediterranean Sea and spent a good portion of our 1983 deployment steaming between the tumult in Beirut, Lebanon and Khaddafi's hoopla in Libya. It garnered us the Navy Unit Commendation, the Navy Expeditionary, and Armed Forces Expeditionary medals.
It's funny that we never really felt like we were in danger, but I guess working on a ship that's almost four football fields long gives one an unrealistic feeling of security. It was a tense period, but not as nerve-wracking as it could have been.
Since leaving the service I've joined the VFW. I'm the new Post Commander of Torrington, CT Post 9086. I'm able to do something meaningful for our veterans and our active duty personnel in my capacity with the VFW that, to me, makes up for what I construe to be a mediocre engagement with the Navy. Hoo-yah!
