Bob's Story

After graduating from Orchard View, I went to Michigan State 1974-1978. Lived all 4 years in McDonel Hall, and had a great time the last two years cooking in the dorm cafeteria. I learned a lot about cooking from Elsie, Dorna, Kathy, and Frank. Got my degree in civil engineering in June 1978. From MSU it was off to Springfield IL for a job with the Illinois DOT. I worked in the bridge design office there- the people in my office (Yavuz, Lee, Dominic, Mike, Simon, Frank, Glenn, and Betty) were all good people and I'm sorry that I had to leave them. Though it was nice to be around all the Lincoln historical sites, it wasn't home and the weather was too hot for my taste. I got a job offer from the Michigan DOT and was happy to accept it in October 1978. For ten years I worked in bridge design and enjoyed it quite a bit. I still know when I'll go on or under one of my bridges while traveling. When you get good at something, you get promoted out of it so I spent two years reviewing bridge plans for local agencies and then spent a year (1991) in purgatory overseeing the engineering unit of our rail freight division. nd was more than happy to lateral to my last MDOT job of bridge management engineer in late 1991. It's just a fancy name for trying to predict bridge needs, make reports for management, and oversee the database. That took me right to retirement in 2018 with 40 years of state service. Currently I work from home for a consulting engineering company. We help government agencies implement their bridge management systems. I met my wife Sue in 1983 and married in 1985, we have the silver anniversary behind us and working toward gold. We have two great kids and she had three from a previous marriage. They're all good people and our nest is empty. Two of the five are married. I've had two great yellow labs. Sam lived from 1988-2001 and our current dog, Ellie, was born in 2007 but will probably be put down in the next few weeks. Still follow the Yankees and Spartans, though I don't get as much time for that as I would like. Life is just too busy for that. Please feel free to drop me an email here. Or friend me on Facebook, i'm not that hard to find (look for bob.kelley.9). I'd love to give you an email address, but the rules don't allow it.

Meeting of the retired MDOT bridge engineers today.
After an ungodly traffic jam, we got to Toledo to see totality. This photo isn't much good, but it was taken at totality.
