Robert's Story
I attended 4 years at Los Altos, but I didn’t excel in any sports, nor did I break any GPA records. I loathed to have my picture taken, so there are only a few in the yearbooks, although I did have a senior prom photo (can’t believe I had such a beautiful date!). But I did graduate, and I did receive my diploma. However, the bulk of my life’s education was after High School. But it couldn’t have happened without the educational base I received there.
Fortunately for me, in 1966, there was a building boom going on and I landed a job at General Telephone & Electronics Company as a lineman. I began working for GTE July 11, 1966, 26 days after graduating from Los Altos. And throughout my career, GTE sent me to many technical training cou...Expand for more
rses and covered most my tuition and books at college night courses. Except for a 2-year break between 1968-70, when I was drafted into the Army, I accumulated 30 years at GTE. I worked in La Puente, Covina, Baldwin Park, and Crescent City, CA., Everett, WA., and 18 years in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho.
I completed my basic training at Ft. Ord, California, along with another classmate, Robert (Bobby) Brown. We were in the same company together and I would sure like to talk to him someday about our experiences and the people we met. If anyone knows who to get in touch with him, please let me know.
After Basic I went to Ft. Gordon, Georgia, for more training and from there to Heilbronn, Germany. I returned home in April 1970 as a Sargent E5.
