Robert's Story

After graduating high school I enrolled at the New Mexico Military Institute in Roswell, New Mexico. Before I started there in the fall of 1980, I was sent to Fort Knox, Kentucky for Army R.O.T.C. basic training for 8 grueling weeks of torturous Army training in the severe humidity of Kentucky during the hottest summer I think I've ever lived through! The following summer I was sent to Fort Riley, Kansas for my R.O.T.C. advanced training for another hot, sweaty and physical 8 weeks of intensive Army training. It was much more interesting than the previous year's training plus I got to ride in a dual rotor transport helicopter -- a CH-47 Chinook. It was an awesomely shaky and loud but intense experience! After graduation from N.M.M.I. and receiving a commission as an officer in the Army Reserves in 1982, I married a girl who lived in Roswell and we ended up moving to Albuquerque, New Mexico to live where I would stay for the next 20 years, raising a family and working jobs in different fields from restaurants, to retail sales to computer tech support, classroom training and instructional design. Although I did try to go back to college to get a degree, I never quite got there. Things like raising kids and other obligations always seemed to interfere with those plans. Another thing that didn't help me was not quite know...Expand for more
ing what I wanted a degree in. In 1999 we bought what was to be our 1st and last house together. In 2002 I had several life-changing moments happen all in the span of a year. The company I was working for ceased operations at our town, leaving about 400 people out of work. My mother-in-law passed away which made my already difficult-to-live-with wife even more difficult after her mother passed away. After a few months of trying to hold things together, I separated from my wife and I relocated back to Texas, eventually settling down in Dallas and working in the IT field. I divorced my 1st wife in 2006 and have since worked very hard to re-establish a relationship with my son and daughter who still live in Albuquerque, NM. I ended up meeting my 2nd wife a year later and we eventually fell in love and married in 2009. My daughter and I have a much better relationship now but my son, well maybe some day he'll change his mind about me. Since 2009 I've transitioned from the IT field to Learning Management Systems Administration and videography. I now have 3 beautiful, healthy grand children and I finally enjoy what I do for a living! Right now I'm in the process of building a web-based health coaching and wellness business called "Simple Steps to a Better You" with my best friend and business partner. Thanks for reading!
