Roberta Filzer's Story
I started life as Bobby Filzer.
I was raised in an Anarchist Colony in New Jersey until I was ten years old. I entered public school in the second half of fourth grade where I discovered that my name was really Roberta! My elementary and secondary school life was chaotic. In all I attended five different public schools and one private school (Elisabeth Irwin) until I graduated Washington Irving High School in 1951. I got married in 1953 while in College and had to drop out temporarily to work. I resumed my college education at Indiana University ten years later. I have four children, two home grown and two adopted from Korea. When my first two children entered school in 1963, I went back to college part time and then on to Law School, also part time, all of which took me 13 years. Upon graduating Law School (1975), I became a labor grievance arbitrator and mediator. My two oldest sons are married and I now have five grandchildren. After 39 years of marriage I was divorced. I worked five years for the Texas Office of the Attorney General from which I am now retired. I have returned to my previous profession, arbitration, which I enjoy very much. I am now in a position to enjoy my first love which is sculpting. I am the Director (Emeritus) of the Austin Sculpture Center in Austin, TX. Some of my sculptures can be viewed on this website. (Classmates knew me as Roberta (Bobby) Filzer. My name is now changed to Bobby Pearl. I have moved around quite a bit, living in Stelton, N.J.; Watchung, N.J.; Manhattan, N.Y.; Arlington, Virginia; Bloomington, Indiana; Varanasi, India; Chicago, Illinois; Stanford, California; New Haven, Ct.; and now, Austin, Tx. I've done a great deal of traveling: Paris, Italy, Spain, Hong Kong, Japan, India, Kashmir, Sri Lanka, Sikkhim, China, Russia, Mexico,a...Expand for more
nd have loved every minute of it. I would very much like to re-connect with my girl-hood friends. My maiden name was Roberta (Bobby) Filzer; my married name was Getman; my post divorce name is Bobby Pearl. I've lost touch with child-hood friends and would like to re-visit those past relationships.
School
My school biography is chaotic. I went to six elementary and secondary schools. Took classes in six colleges while raising four children. Graduated Indiana University at the age of 40, in 1970. I went to Law School at Indiana University Law School and graduated in 1975.
College
All four of my children were raised concurrently with my College going years. I loved taking classes, both pre and post matriculation, no matter which of the many Colleges I attended. They included City College of New York, Indiana University, De Paul, Banaras Hindu University, Yale, Austin Community College. I graduated Indiana University in 1970. I went on to Indiana University Law School, and graduated in 1975. I still love going to school.
Workplace
I have been doing labor arbitration and mediation since graduation from Law School in 1976 with a six year break from 1995 to 2001. During that time I worked for the Attorney General's Office in Austin, Texas. I have done Grievance Arbitration and Interest Arbitration in various states depending on where I was living at the time. I am the Director (Emeritus) of the Austin Sculpture Center and I also teach sculpting to adults and children. I sculpt in clay, cast in bronze and have a lovely sculpture garden filled with many of my sculptures including the first one I made at the age of fifteen (my favorite). I finally have every thing I have yearned for: My own Sculpture Garden, my children and grand children and a great community of Artist friends and neighbors.
