Robin's Story

Life Those who remember me may find all this a little difficult to swallow, but I am a happy Christian homeschooling mom of 6 who grinds her own whole wheat for homemade bread. Although we have lived out-of-state since we were married, Michael (husband of 27 years) and I were married in the Chapel in the Canyon there in Canoga Park. We have a "few" pets: goats, rabbits, cats, turtles, hamsters, fish . . . And in recent years three of my children and I have become vegans and gotten involved in compassion for animals. I'm a dinosaur in the kitchen: I cook every meal we eat, and I cook from scratch, including grinding the wheat for the pumpkin bread (from the pumpkin I grew, usually). We don't always eat together at the table (crazy working hours and social lives for everyone), but it's there for them when they make it home. Our oldest boy works for the county library system (I bred at least TWO committed bookophiles). Our second son is working on a fantasy novel (while he works at odd jobs--you know how it is lol). Our third son is married and was working at a structural engineering firm until the economy shut the firm down, so he's biding his time working at WalMart now. His wife does the floral department for a local chain store. The fourth is in college, changed his major a couple of times (everything from mechanical engineering to French) and is engaged to a darling French Canadian girl. Our 17yo daughter is autistic, but has come an enormously long way, and is now working about 2 or so grade levels behind--quite an accomplishment for someone who used to be non-verbal and just flapped fingers. The youngest, 14yo, has taken up violin, and having excellent pitch (sadly, a rarity in our family lol) is doing pretty well! And she's more of a blonde than anyone can believe. She keeps us howling with the blonde things she says. She's also SOOOO social, and has friends across several counties, and is gone so much of the time. For anyone who knew my mom, she's still kicking! She remarried shortly after my HS graduation, and my stepdad (WONDERFUL guy) passed away a few years ago. My mom then moved near us from Las Vegas where they had been living. ...Expand for more
She has gone blind, but her health is good and although she's 92 now she still has her nails and hair done and shops at Chico's and Nordstrom (even if SHE can't see, others can, right?). Would love to hear from some of you! Find me at Facebook! Workplace My favorite job ever was as Office Manager for Coca-Cola's Regional Office in Salt Lake City. GREAT people. One of the few places that meant it when they said, "We think of ourselves as a team." The perks (free tickets to just about everything anywhere in the country, membership at Club 33 at Disneyland, a bunch of other cool things), visits with celebrities who were in some way sponsoring Coke or on a commercial or something, and camaraderie can't be replaced. I was offered a job as a legal secretary (I had no legal training, but he called me anyway) for the President of the Utah Bar Association. It was a SUBSTANTIAL pay increase, and now I had someone to water MY plants and fuss over ME. I lasted three months. I hated it. It was competitive and cut-throat in ways I couldn't abide (and after the Coke/Pepsi antipathy, I thought I knew all about competition). I watched clients be billed for an hour when 3 minutes of work was done. Some of the lawyers were quite nice, but more were arrogant, over-bearing, and sure that they were better than the average joe. I called Coke after 3 months and begged for mercy. Could I come home, please? Their replacement for me hadn't worked out well (she embezzled), so I went back. Mostly I've been at home, homeschooling and being a housewife, but I worked for a few years--part-time--at the library, and that was great, too. The library is the homeschooler's candy store, and we were all moms who "got it" with each other when there was a crisis at home and we needed to cover for one another. It was another great feeling of being on a team that cared. Now I'm raising Nigerian dwarf goats, working again part-time at the library since Michael retired last year, giving yoga lessons, managing my mom's trust, doing some caregiving for my mom (she lives with my son and dil now), homeschooling, cooking, gardening, and who knows what else!
