Roderick's Story
In June of 1974 I completed the 9th grade and left for the US Navy. Frist bootcamp at Great Lakes Illinois. Then to Norfolk Virginia for a one-month tech school they called it an A school in the Navy. Then I headed to my first ship the USS Graham County AGP-1176 the Ship was one month older than I was the ship had its Birthday Feb. 15,1974it was 17 years old my Birthday was March 15,1974, I was also 17 years old. he duty driver for the ship and we headed to Naples Italy; to Naval Air Sation My ship was due back into port in # days. then they took me to Fleet Landing and then by a shuttle boat I was taken to my ship. It was Oct. 74 and I stayed on my ship until Oct. 76. The Vietnam War was still going on. They told everyone it ended in 1973 not true it really only ended for American on April 30th,1975. I was one of the lucky ones I never went into combat. On my ship we fought fires a lot of them.
