Roderick's Story

After leaving City College Elvin Randall and I joined the Air Force. I had 4 weeks of basic training at Lackland AFB, Texas in late July of 1960 and completed at Chanute AFB, Ill. While at Chanute I played on the Squadron football team and attained Squadron Leadership serving as the Student Squadron Commander aka "Red Rope". I completed the Electronic Flight Trainer Course and was assigned to the 4751st Air Defense Squadron's Link Trainer Section on Hurlburt Field aka "field 9" on the Eglin AFB complex in NW Florida. While at Eglin I played on the Eglin AFB Eagles football team and the Ft. Walton Jets Baseball team (the Black community team). Upon leaving the Air Force, I attended the Baltimore Jr. College and Johns Hopkins University at the Homewood Campus in Baltimore. While in school I worked for the Alcolac Chemical Company and General Electric before landing a great job with the C&P Tel. Co. on the installation of the 2nd Electronic Tel. orld. I spent 39 years in various positions (Frameman, Central Office Techn., Central Office Maint. Foreman, Electronics Equipment Training Instructor, Tel. Equipment Station Installation and Repair Foreman, Test Desk Foreman, Wire Chief, District Plant Manager, and Director National 9-1-1 Network Management) while the Bell System morphed to Bell Atlantic, and finally ended up as Verizon. I started building home computers with the Intel 4 bit processors in the early 70's. Went through the MITS and IMSAI phases. I even had Bill Gates call me while he was in college about a bulletin board system (Baltimore Micro Mail PBBS) I ran. I have three children (2 daughters who are lawyers and a son who is a bank VP). At the moment we have 4 grand children (3 boys and a girl). Since retiring in Nov. 2003 we have visited France, Italy, and have taken numerous trips within the US for R&R. Of course I am having a ball in amateur radio (Ham Radio). My call is WA3MEZ.
