Rock (Rod)'s Story
I attended 13 different schools before graduating from Portage HS in 1961. I remember only having a few good friends at any of those schools, so you probably never got to really know me. My loss I'm sure. If you do remember, please contact me, my birth name is Roderick, over the years I've gone by Roddy, Rodney, Rod and now I go by Rock... During my teen years my Mom often called me Ralph?? I've visited all fifty States and WA DC, and lived in nine different states. My Dad was an Industrial Construction worker, so we moved often during my elementary and high school years. After graduating HS, I attended Indiana University NW campus for one semester. That wasn't for me, so stopped and enrolled in a four-year Boilermaker Apprenticeship at U.S. Steel Corp's Sheet and Tin Mill in Gary, IN. That was administered and accredited by Purdue University NW, and then married my HS sweetheart. I received my Structural Engineering Journeyman ‘Boilermaker’ degree in late 1965. In the summer of 1966, we divorced! In Oct 1966, single and college deferment exhausted, and with the US Steel's recommendation to avoid the imminent military ...Expand for more
draft at age 23, I enlisted in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War era and interestingly spent the next 40 years serving with the USAF, visiting 10 different countries, spending 10 of those years in Japan, where I remarried. We've been together now for 54+ great years. I enjoyed the USAF life much more than the NW Indiana Environment, so elected not to return to my “guaranteed” U.S. Steel employment position; after completing the 4-year military service commitment. That was actually a God Given Blessing for me because the plant closed 6 years after I left for the USAF. Now I'm fully retired and live in what I call, God's Country, the Pacific NW! I still enjoy traveling around our great USA and visiting ole' friends along the way. I've been an avid NASCAR fan ever since my Daytona Beach racing experiences back in the 1950's and still travel to many of the NASCAR tracks.
So, Let’s stay in touch! We are all over 80 years now and our groups are naturally thinning! I hold no hard feelings or grudges toward anyone from my past school yard experiences. Each new day is a Blessing from God, so let's fully enjoy them together…
