Rodney's Story
Life
I got married in 1992, have two boys ([Joseph-22] & [Alexander (goes by Zander-16]), two dogs(Le Femme Nikita [Rottweiler] & Lucy [Golden Retriever]) and one cat(Macy) and one kitten (KitKat). I retired in Sep 2009 from the Navy with 21 yrs 3months 9days, but who was counting. I took a job contracting at Electric Boat here in Groton, CT. Now I am a full time EB employee and loving it. I am still deciding what to do when I grow up, as my wife says, but this is a good start. Just need to decide on which Masters program and get it started and done.
School
Well, school was school.
College
I received an Associates of Applied Science in Technology in December 2003 from Valdosta State University. I received an Associates of Liberal Arts and a Bachelors of Science in Education in Adult Career Trade, Technical and Industrial fields in May 2005.
Workplace
While on my first shore duty I got a part-time job working in Beit Brothers, a local grocery store in the Deli department. I had a lot of fun in an interesting job. I ended up becoming the pizza guy when they put in a hot food section. I actually enjoyed and had fun with that. I also had a part-time job on my second shore duty. I worked as a Banquet Bartender at the Amelia Island Plantation in Amelia Island, FL. It is a four star resort that caters to community and business groups. The pay was great and I was meeting some interesting people in different corporations from around the country and world. Never hurts to start networking a few years ahead of retirement. It's surprising to meet people who know things about Tiffin and the surrounding area. I had customers describe parts of town that I can barely remember. I even had people name classmates, by their business relationships with parents from years ago (for example Doctors and Lawyers).
Military
Went to Boot Camp (Jun-Aug88) in Orlando, Fl, from there I attended Nuclear Electricians Mate 'A' School (Aug88-Jan89). Then Naval Nuclear Powe...Expand for more
r School (Jan-Jun89), made it 19 of 24 weeks. From there I went to Groton, CT for Submarine school (Jul-Sep89), onto Damneck, VA for Strategic Weapons System Electronics 'A' School (Sep89-Mar90). I then attended Missile Technician 'C' School (Mar-Aug90) in Kingsbay, GA. Transferred to USS MARYLAND SSBN 738 (Gold) in the shipyard (Aug90-Jun92) in Groton, CT, during this time I was lucky enough to go out on the USS PITTSBURGH SSN 720 for a Mediterranean run during Desert Storm, in which I went to La Maddalena, Italy and Toulon, France (Sep90-Feb91). When we commissioned the USS MARYLAND SSBN 738 (Gold) I became a Plank owner, as well as, moved back to Kingsbay, GA (Jun92-OCT94). My first shore duty was at Naval Submarine School in Groton, CT as a Military Training Instructor (similar to a Recruit Company Commander from Boot Camp) (Oct94-Dec97). Returned to Kingsbay, GA, to the USS WYOMING SSBN 742 (Gold) (I was able to visit Gibraltar and Puerto Rico) (Jan98-Feb02). Next was my second shore duty in Kingsbay, GA at TRIDENT Training Facility where I was the Missile Technician 'C' School Leading Petty Officer (LPO) (Feb02-May05). It was time for me to return to Sea duty, I received orders to the USS PITTSBURGH as a LAN Administrator, but of course I needed to attend more schooling to fill this postion. I attended and graduated from Journeyman Network-Core (J-Net Core or JNC), which is great since I am/was the test subject for the school for my rating (May05-Jul05). I then got to go to sunny San Diego, California for Advanced Network Analyst(ANA) School (Jul05-Sep05). While there I was selected for Chief Petty Officer. Reported to the USS PITTSBURGH SSN 720, in Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, Portsmouth, New Hampshire as MTC(SS) Johnson (Sep05-Present). So far I have visited PEV, Florida for Fleet Week, Panama, Georiga, Spain, Scotland, Tunisia and Cape Verde. I am happy to say before I retired my son Zander was able to go on a three day tiger cruise with me.
