Roger's Story
My parents were Karl and Hattie (Barrow) Hammer. I was raised with five brothers and two sisters on the farm east of Greenwood, Nebraska. I attended a country school, Ashgrove District 82 and graduated from Ashland-Greenwood High School in 1962. I received my Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln in 1967. I began my career as a Soil Scientist with the Soil Conservation Service in 1967 in Hebron, Nebraska. I furloughed to enlist in the United States Army from 1967 to 1970. After Basic Training in Ft. Bliss, Texas, I attended the Soil Analyst School at Ft. Belvoir, Virginia and was a Terrain Analyst in Vietnam and Germany.

eys in Antelope, Clay, Fillmore, Brown, Cherry, McPherson, Arthur, Thomas, and Hooker Counties. My family and I lived in or near the Nebraska towns of Neligh, Clay Center, Johnstown, and Valentine. I was also a Soil Scientist on a Wetland Regional Team in Garden City, Kansas and a Resource Soil Scientist in O’Neill, Nebraska. I retired from the Natural Resources Conservation service on January 1, 2011 in North Platte, Nebraska and moved to Lincoln, Nebraska in 2013 and Wahoo, Nebraska in 2017.
I have six living children and seven grandchildren and enjoy all their activities. I enjoy country and western dancing, photography, art work, organic gardening, wildlife viewing, and hiking on trails. I live in Wahoo, Nebraska.
