Roland's Story
Military
I was a member of the Springfield MA. U. S. Naval Reserve Unit and was called to active duty at the height of the Korean War in March of 1952. I did my boot camp training in Bainbridge MD and finished 12 weeks later.
After returning from a 2 week leave, I was assigned to the USS Furse DDR 882 a Destroyer stationed out of Norfolk Virginia. That same year after a 6 week shakedown cruise to the Caribbean we returned to Norfolk and received orders to go to Charlestown Naval Shipyard outside of Boston for a complete overhaul. It turns out we were there for 7 months.

dless to say, I was pleased because it enabled me to come home almost every weekend. This was some of the best duty I had in the Navy. After the overhaul, we returned to Norfolk VA. and made ready for a 6 month cruise to the Mediterranean. We visited almost every port in Italy. We also made stops in Spain, Gibraltar, Sardinia Oran Algiers and Cherbourg France. I was lucky enough to get a 3 day trip to Paris. My all time favorite stop ( we were there twice), was a visit to the seaside port of Villafrabch Sur La Mer on the French Riviera. Memories that will last until I pass away.
