Rolf's Story
Life
My wife, two sons and I live in Centennial, Colorado - a few miles south of Denver. My wife and I met through the Colorado Mountain Club; we share passions for hiking and telemark skiing.
After high school in Humble, Texas and college in Houston, I headed east for law school in New York City, then back to Houston to work four years at a big firm. Then I quit and spent 1-1/2 years backpacking around the western U.S. and taking an Outward Bound semester course.
I ended up in Denver, working for an environmental organization for one year before signing on as a staff lawyer with the Regional Transportation District - the Denver area's mass transit provider. Many years later, I'm still with RTD and loving it. I do a little bit of everything at RTD: personal injury defense, workers' compensation hearings, labor arbitrations and negotiations, contract negotiations, employment disputes, first amendment issues, and a bunch of other stuff.
My family and I love getting into the backcountry and hiking in Colorado's incredible mountains. We are also very fond of old-time dancing (waltz, contra, swing, tango) and bluegrass music. My parents live close by.
My little brother Erik is a famous spa...Expand for more
ce scientist who's been written up in Time magazine and who's published articles in Scientific American and elsewhere. He lives in Santa Cruz with his two sons. My parents live about a third of a mile from us in our neighborhood, so we get to see them all the time.
We welcome visitors! I'd be happy to "tour guide" or give travel suggestions to any classmates coming out to Colorado. and I'd enjoy hearing from classmates.
School
I still remember the words to my high school song: "In dear old Humble High School, beneath the Texas sun / Where when our work is finished, our time is spent in fun / We love to work, we love to play / Spending many a long happy day-ay-ay-ay / The faculty that aids us to reach our higher aim / Will share with us the glory of Humble's future fame / We hate to see, the time is nigh / When we part from dear old Humble High!
And if THAT doesn't say how I feel about my good old alma mater, I'm not sure what else could!
Workplace
I work in the legal department for the Regional Transportation District in Denver. Previous jobs were as a lawyer with the Sierra Club Legal Defense Fund (now Earthjustice Legal Defense Fund) in Denver, and the law firm Baker Botts in Houston.
