Ron's Story

After graduating from Hapnot, I spent the next few years at University of Manitoba with summers in Flin Flon working for HBM&S, finally graduating with a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering. Not all of the summer jobs were great but as an engineering student, I tended to be extremely lucky compared to the rest of the guys who worked in some really ugly jobs. My worst might have been the time I had to clean up a 45 gallon drum of molasses that had been parked upside down in the foundry and eventually leaked the entire contents into a small storage room. I can taste molasses to this day merely by thinking about it. When I graduated, companies were hiring engineers by the boatload so there were lots of opportunities. Eventually, I selected General Electric and drove off to Toronto for a series of 6 month assignments around the company, trying to find something interesting. After reasonably boring stints in street lighting, traffic control systems and heavy power transmission, I found some excitement. During the boring stuff, I got to experience the 1966 power grid blackout driving through downtown Toronto. I almost caused an assembly line strike at GE by merely walking down the line with a clip board. I learned how to reverse engineer our competitor's products. How is that for research in Canada? In Peterborough, I finally found something that turned me on in the real-time computer group. And I also met my future wife, Wendy. Some interesting assignments installing computers at Expo 67, a cement plant, a smelter and finally an icebreaker. My poor icebreaker computer suffered an intentional bucket of salt water on its shakedown voyage from a crew member who was not too excited about computers taking over! We married in 1967 and I went back to school at the University of Waterloo. Wendy worked while I studied hard, graduating in 1969 with a Master's degree in Mathematics with a major in Computer Science. Now, there were even more job opportunities. I told potential employers that I was bilingual - I spoke hardware and software! We moved to Ottawa where I joined Systems Dimensions Limited and enjoyed almost 10 years there while our 3 kids (Thomas, Melanie and Kimberly) were born. I began as a consultant and progressed to managing the consultant group. Then I moved into managing the computer network and finished my term at SDL in product marketing. We left Ottawa in 1978 and flew west to Calgary where I worked with my brother Tom in the cedar lumber business for a couple of years. No computers! In 1980, I joined Gellman, Hayward & Partners as a consultant. I truly enjoyed my years working with the excellent folks at G&H progressing to principal, then partner and finally managing partner for western Canada. We enjoyed some amazing assignments with some outstanding clients. In 1990, I left G&H and formed my own consultancy, Gilmore & Associates Inc. which continues today with several terrific partners. Management consulting in information technology has been a most rewarding career working with bright folks on complex problems across western Canada and sometimes beyond. In 2002, I took a team of consultants over to Europe for almost 2 years working on a series of as...Expand for more
signments for a large international chemical concern based in London. The work was challenging and most rewarding but the commute was a bit rough at times. Along the way, we had some personal fun building an escape place in Costa Rica with some great partners. We built a small four-unit complex "Villas Canadiense" complete with swimming pool on the west coast of the Nicoya Peninsula - right on the Pacific Ocean. This is about the only place to go when it gets really cold. With another friend, we established an Old-Timers hockey team that still entertains us on Friday nights despite our advancing age. Wendy and I also found a place on the lake at Sicamous in BC where we try to spend chunks of our summers. Wendy and I have had some fun holidays with a Panama cruise, 18 European countries in 28 days, 18 days in Turkey, 18 days in Egypt, a trip to Hong Kong, Macao and Thailand, the Oregon Trail, the west coast islands, the Oregon coast lighthouse tour, etc. Too many great places to visit and too little time perhaps. We have been blessed with a wonderful set of kids who have grown into responsible adults, making good choices in their careers and friends. I now have two beautiful grandkids who hug me, crawl all over me and even laugh at my jokes. Flin Flon continues to be an integral part of my past and almost daily, I meet folks who also have a connection to the north. At a Calgary Flames game the other night, I handed my winter coat into the coat check and the women behind the counter commented that my coat looked appropriate for the bitterly cold weather that evening. I told her that it was merely my "Flin Flon spring jacket"! Of course, this young lady had family from Flin Flon and our conversation managed to back up the line for others trying to drop off their coats. This type of thing happens to me all of the time in restaurants, airports, sporting events, etc. Love it! Our oldest daughter Melanie has moved to Hawaii with our two beautiful grandkids. Before they left, they insisted that we all drive north to visit Flin Flon once more. We caravaned in two vehicles north with walky-talky communications for a great holiday. My brother Tom and his wife, Collette hosted us at the site of the old family cottage at Baker's Narrows. Now, the kids have left and we force ourselves to visit them once a year in the other paradise called Hawaii. Tough job but someone has to do it! Here's hoping that your journey through life has been as exciting and fulfulling as my most fortunate journey. Good friends that I grew up with in Flin Flon remain in my circle of active contact and I truly appreciate this. We share similar small town values and a joy for life. And, all of those old Flin Flon stories never fail to entertain, even though we have heard them a thousand times. I wish I could name all of my teachers who helped formulate who I am. Unfortunately, I cannot remember all of the names. And, I am sure that I never did thank them. If any of you happen to read this, thanks loads! I wish I knew where all of my former classmates and friends ended up. You were all really neat people that I truly enjoyed. Well, maybe I should qualify that a bit but I won't. Ron Gilmore.
