Ron's Story

Life LCDR Ron C. Magwood was born in Charleston, South Carolina. After graduation from San Gorgonio High School in 1980, he enlisted in the Navy at RTC San Diego and attended the S-3A Viking VS-41 CRAIG in 1980. Serving as and Aircrewman onboard the S-3A Viking, AWAN Magwood reported to VS-28 Gamblers of Carrier Airwing Six and served onboard the USS Indepedence for 2 tours (Lebanon, Grenada, North Atlantic). In 1984 AW2 Magwood reported to VS-41 as a flight instructor. He graduated in 1987 from the Southern Illinois University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Aeronautical Engineering and Management. In 1988 AW1 Magwood was ordered to report to Pacific Forward Area Support Team as an Acoustic Intelligence Analyst. In August of 1989 AWC Magwood was accepted to Aviation Officer Candidate School where he graduated and received orders as a Commissioned Officer United States Navy. He commenced flight training in August 1990 and was designated a Naval Flight Officer in August 1992. He reported to his initial squadron tour in September 1993 with Patrol Squadron FORTY NINE at NAS Jacksonville Florida where he served as Command Services Officer. VP-49 decommissioned later that year and he transferred to Patrol Squadron FIVE and served as Plans Officer, Assistant Tactics Officer, Mining Officer, and NFO NATOPS. He was designated a Patrol Plane Tactical Coordinator, Mission Commander and Instructor TACCO during this tour and participated in deployments to Keflavik, Iceland, Sigonella, IT, Roosevelt Roads and Howard AFB, Panama. and Reconnaissance Wing ELEVEN in September 1996 and was designated a Task Group Watch Officer and Weapon System Instructor/Evaluator in January 1996. While at CPRW-11, he served as the Assistant. Training Officer. In September 1998, LCDR Magwood reported to the USS John F. Kennedy. He served as the Assistant Strike Operations Officer and Training Officer. During this tour he was designated as Joint Forces Air Component Commander Afloat Mission Planner during Operation Southern Watch. Reporting to Commander Patrol Squadron THIRTY in September 2000, LCDR Magwood served as Weapon Tactic Unit Division Officer where he received Advance Qualification Designation as an Orion Weapon Tactics Instructor. He joined Patrol Squadron SIXTEEN in July 2003 at NAS Jacksonville, Florida serving initially as the Tactics Officer then as the Training Officer. In June 2004, LCDR Magwood assumed the duties of the Operations Office completing deployment in 3 major AORs. LCDR Magwood led VP-16 to an outstanding deployment in Kandahar, Afghanistan, Iraq, Bahrain, Sigonella Italy and El Salvador. Reporting to Commander, Operational Test and Evaluation Force LCDR Magwood now serves as Operational Test Director for CNO Special Programs. LCDR Magwood’s awards include the Navy Commendation Medal (six), Navy Achievement Medals (four) and various service medals. LCDR Magwood is the son of Charles and Blondell Magwood of San Bernardino California. He is married to the former Carolyn Larue Partee of Kansas City, Kansas. They have two children Ron Jeremiah (16) and Joseph Nathaniel (4).
