Mike's Story

Two weeks after graduation I went to work at Seaboard Finance Company in downtown Oakland. A year later I married my best friend, and boyfriend, Ron Meek. At that time he was in the US Navy going to Nuclear Power School in Idaho. After our wedding at Mills /Terrace Christian Church, we moved to Pocatello for five months. I had never been out of California. Upon completion of his training Ron’s first assignment as a Reactor Operator was aboard the USS Seawolf. All but two of his classmates received duty assignments on the West Coast. We were one of the two assigned to the East coast; New London, CT. Both of our daughters, Kathleen and Karen were born there. In May of 1964 Ron completed his six years in the submarine service. We returned to CA where we hoped that Ron could find employment utilizing his Navy background and experience. That was not to be. Ron was the first Nuclear Reactor Operator hired at Dairyland Power Cooperative, in La Cross, WI. We move to Wisconsin and became Midwesterners. We first lived in town and then two years later we bought a 160 acre farm outside the small town of Genoa. We loved living in the country and enjoyed being "gentlemen" farmers. We joined the Lutheran Church and became active in the community. At some point we realized that Ron's position of Reactor Operator was as high as he was going to be able to go for many years. This being the case we did some research and he found a job as a shift supervisor in a coal fired power plant in Hayden, CO for Colorado Ute. It was hard to say good bye to our friends in WI, but we made the move and soon settled into life in the mountains of CO. It's beautiful country, and the area was considered, rural and remote. This is quite a long way for a city girl from California. We enjoyed our time there for 14 months before we took a leap of faith. The job for Ron was good and I was happy and busy as a stay at home Mom, but we realized that at age 29 Ron had advanced as far as he could go without furthering his education. He had gone to college for one year right out of High School at UC Berkeley before going into the Navy. Again we did more research and wrote letters. We visited three different colleges that had good Electrical Engineering programs. By this time Ron has earned his private pilots license and we were able to fly to the various locations. We chose New Mexico State University at Las Cruces, NM. There was much thought and prayers during this time period. We downsized our belongings, loaded up our worldly possessions into a U-Haul Truck and headed from Hayden, CO to Las Cruces to move into married student housing. This was in August 1969, and our daughters Kathy and Karen were starting into first and second grade. Ron entered as a freshman at NMSU on Academic probation. He earned his BSEE in 3 years and his Masters in Power Management in 9 months. He graduated with honors. During this time I earned my PHT (Put Hubby Through) Degree and was honored at a graduation ceremony also. We lived on campus and I worked for the NMSU University Police. I started out as Dispatcher/University Operator, and was promoted to Secretary to Investigations, then Secretary to the Chief. I was also a uniformed Police Aide and assisted officers as needed. It was a very interesting job! Ron had job offers all over the country. We chose to move to the KC area were Ron began his 25 year care...Expand for more
er in Electrical Engineering at Black & Veatch Consulting Engineers. I found once the girls went back to school, after our summer break, that I needed more to do. I applied at the Overland Park PD; there were no openings. To make a long story short I began my insurance career as a switchboard operator and typist for Foremost Insurance Co. Within 3 months I was an Underwriting Trainee. I was in the right place at the right time. Over the years I advanced from underwriting recreational vehicles, to personal lines, to Casualty with a specialty in Umbrella and Multi-line Underwriting. Along the way I earned my professional designations, AU, AI, CPCU and CIC. I loved insurance. During our time in KC we accepted two field assignments; one in Dhaka, Bangladesh and the other in Phoenix, AZ. We spent 1½ years in Dhaka. Ron was the Office Administrator for the Engineering Office and Consulting Engr. I worked first at the American School as a registrar and then as Assistant Manager of the American Club. I also ran the canteen at the American Embassy in downtown Dhaka. The great benefit of this assignment was that we got to travel around the world twice! Our assignment in Phoenix was to be for 6 months and we ended up staying 4 years! I was able to transfer from KC to the Phoenix Regional Office of CNA, and then back again 4 yrs later. We loved Phoenix in the winter time, but not so much in the summer. The year we moved back to Kansas they set a record of 122 degrees on June 22nd. We retired early at age 57, 53 respectively. We bought a home on Lake of the Ozarks in Sunrise Beach, MO. During that time we bought a 40' motor home and spent about 6 months of the year traveling. It became apparent that we didn't want to be tied down to a house and its maintenance, etc when we were on the road. We sold the lake home and became "full-timers" for about 9 months. We eventually purchased a large home with our youngest daughter Karen Lynn and our son-in-law Dan. They got the benefit of a larger home and we didn't have to worry about leaving our home "unattended" when we were traveling. For several years we were only home about two weeks and traveling the remainder of the time. We enjoyed work camping in the summers; Oregon, Colorado, New Mexico and Maine. We spend winters in Florida; the last several years we’ve been at Ancient Oaks RV Resort in Okeechobee. We enjoyed many hobbies through the years, back backing, flying, sailing, cycling, genealogy, traveling and gardening. We have had a home computer since 1974. Over the years genealogy research has become much easier as so much is now on-line. Last October I completed my training to become a Master Gardener in MD. Most of my volunteer hours have been at the Carroll County Heirloom Garden at the Ag Center. This May I volunteered to put in a garden at the Westminster Senior Center. It’s been a lot of hard work and has given me a great feeling of accomplishment. I’ve made several new gardening friends and the produce we raise goes to the seniors who visit the center. Ron is teaching a Stained Glass Class at the Senior Center and I am his assistant along with our daughter Karen. We enjoy being active in the community as well as in our church. Our family is small, we have our two daughters, one son-in-law and three grandsons. Ron and I enjoy life and love people and this beautiful country of ours.
