Ronald's Story

Life I am married and have two boys and two girls. I am working and living in California. I work for the U.S. Navy as an Environmental Protection Specialist. I specialize in Haz-Mat Response, Hazardous Waste Mangement and Industrial clean-up. I provide training for military and civilians on Hazardous Waste management. My current assignment is working on San Nicolas Island, which is 68 miles off shore. I fly out on Monday morning and fly in on either Wednesday or Thursday afternoon. We recieve our fuel by barge, so I coordinate the fuel transfer from the barge to our fuel farm facility. We also receive most of our large cargo by barge and I am a member of the barge crew as well. I have 26 years working for the Navy. My day or so on the mainland is usualy spent in meetings or preparing cargo to go out. My legacy I am working on is, that each base I have worked on is cleaner when I leave than it was when I arrived. So far this is my 5th Navy facility and I have been able to coordinate clean up projects at each one. We have removed 360 tons of debris from the island, which is above the daily generation. I enjoy outdoor recreation, fishing, camping, hicking and boating. I prefer to camp off season, smaller crowds. Being out on the water is my first love, my wife is a very close second. I boat and fish to relax. Camping recharges my battery. Hiking lets me enjoy another passion, photography. I have had 3 photos published in national magazines. I like walking on the beach to collect shells and stones for projects. I enjoy woodworking and creating things with my own hands. Every year we have a Christmas Festival on the island. I collect the ceramic village bldgs. and accessories. I build the scene on the stage in the theater. It is 16 feet wide, 8 feet deep and 4 feet tall. It has the ocean with the water, shorelin and beaches, docks and boats. It then raises to a community park and downtown. Then it raises again for farming an...Expand for more
d ponds. Then there are mountain streams, lake and mountains. It takes me two months of evening to set the whole scene up. I have wildlife, people, pets, vehicles, roads, lights and etc. to finish the scene. I like decorating for all the holidays at home as well. Every year I convert my front yard into a haunted house for the neighborhood kids. They have fun, some have grown up and now bring their children. Christmas I convert the front yard in to a winter wonderland. I do volunteer work as well. I have been involved in the Internation Coastal Clean-up Day, for 17 years. I am the Beach Captain for two miles of beach, that has wet lands, sand dunes and is home for endangered birds and haul out area for Sea Lions, Elephant Seals amd Harbor Seals. I help rescue injured wildlife and abandoned babies. I have transported sick and/or injured dolphins to Sea World in San Diego. I have been there 6 times, but I have never seen a show. I have been back stag though, amazing. We also do educational programs for the local schools. Set up an educational booth at local festivals. Where we talk about human activities that have negative impact on the environment and wildlife. We show case rescues and some of the terrible things that we see people do to wildlife. But, we also talk about things we can all do to help. We collect data for researchers. Last year I got to work with the 3 most renown vets working with sea otters. It was an amazing experience. For more info on animals e-mail me. Last, but not least is my wife. I always beleve in saving the best for last. Her name is Barbara. She was born in the Bronx of New York. She is of Italian/German desent. Fell in love and got married. She has the same passion for the wildlife as I do. You learn about about your relationship when you spend as much as we do in the cab of that truck moving animals. She is my teddy bear, sunshine and soul mate. She's city, quite and I'm country, loud.
