Ronald's Story

Life Came from a poor family. Mother died in 1945. Father was an Air Force pilot during WWII and remarried, but did not raise me. Raised by paternal grandmother. I was shy in public school and lacked self-confidence. This changed after graduating from high school and upon entering the Navy. Top 5% of class (92%) in Navy Corp School. Selected duty in Florida. Married Florida girl and graduated with B.S. degree (cum laude) from Jacksonville University. Took Ford position and completed MBA at the University of Detroit. Retired at age 57 from Ford and became a business instructor at local Detroit college. Plan to spend latter years in Florida. Have 3 grandchildren (Alexandra, Clayton and Jasper aka as Jack). Alex is the aspiring Dentist accepted to the University of Michigan Dental School starting on 6/20/2022. Clayton (Clay) is a very good baseball player. He was a starter as a Freshman in High School and plays travel ball. He committed to a full baseball scholarship to Palm Beach State College. That was a bust because the coach was terrible. he came back to Michigan and accepted a similar scholarship with the Lansing Community College Stars, Jack is now 10 years old. He has an enormous vocabulary and is being home schooled. He lives in Troy, Alabama. He is an advanced critical thinker for his age. His parents are both well educated. He should have a bright future. School Lacked self-confidence and self-esteem. Hung around the edges and did not participate in activities as much as I should have participated. A decent, but unmotivated student. Things changed dramatically for me after high school. For one, I grew 4-5 inches taller, joined the Navy and started to develop the self-confidence and self-esteem I was missing in high school. College Took 12 years after high school to receive B.S degree (4 of those years were in the Navy). Wife and children motivated me to complete college. Became a very good student and was considered in the top 5 students graduating from the business department of Jacksonville University. Majored in Management with minor in Economics and a 3.6 GPA. Ford hired me through on campus recruitment. Ford paid for my MBA degree. Workplace Hospital Corpsman (USN). Registered Nuclear Medical Technologist for six years while going to college. Salesman for men's suits in an exclusive department store for about a year just prior to college graduation. Military Probably the most fun time of my life. No difficult responsibilities. Good pay, good food and time to explore my identity away from home. A structured environment which helped me develop self-confidence and self-esteem. Was a better than average athlete which gave me great assignments. Played Navy softball, basketball, pool and ping pong. I was also a competitive swimmer in the Navy (backstroke). I Was a first baseman on the All Navy District softball team. My Naval boss farmed me out, regularly, to local commercial softball teams that needed help. Really enjoyed this time of my life. My Naval boss bought me gloves, cleats and bats since we were paid so poorly and he was a LCDR. Doesn't get much better. Teachers There are a couple of teachers that had a big impact on my life. One was Nellie McGinnis who was my sixth grade math teacher from Turner Elementary School. Another was McNichols (last name) who taught Labor Economics at Jacksonville University in Florida. I actually liked math in sixth grade and this helped me in higher math classes. McNichols was an unusual teacher. He had a surprise quiz once a week. You knew it was coming, but you didn't know which day. The student had the choice of answering one of three questions. Each question was broad enough the write a book about. You had 15 minutes to pick your question and write a coherent paper on the subject. He graded on content, sentence construction, paragraph construction and all of the other principles of English and go...Expand for more
od writing and he was a tough grader. I used this discipline many times in my adult life. They have likely both passed, but they were, in my opinion, remarkable teachers. Sports Moments There were a couple of times in my sports life where I was able to see everything happening in slow motion and get a jump start on what was happening before it actually happened (tenths of a second). This always resulted in ooh's and ah's and the people viewing did not understanding how I could have made the play. Unfortunately, this only happened when the game was on the line and it was not consistent. A Cincinnati Reds scout talked to me when I was playing fast pitch softball in a commercial league in Jacksonville. When he found out I was 21 years old he lost interest immediately. Miscellaneous If I won a $100 million I would give $50 million to charities of my choosing and $50 million to establish an estate for my children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. My first crush occurred in sixth grade and the young ladies name was Donna Westphal. She lived in Penn Hills and I simply was too young to understand my feelings. When I was about 10 years old I fell through the ice on an old pond near my home. The water was deep, but a friend, Johnny Sekurka, spending time with his grandmother who lived on Montier Street, managed to pull me out with a tree branch and saved my life. Traveled for part of my business career with Ford. Worked for brief periods of time in Argentina, Brazil, Thailand, Britain, Australia, Germany and Italy. Was the Strategy. Manager for International Financing Operations when I retired from Ford and I started working the next month as a business instructor at Henry Ford College. Really enjoyed most of my work at Ford Financial Services. I did not enjoy it when I had a bad supervisor or we had a poor CEO. Wrote and copyrighted a book on Supervision and Team Building based largely on my Ford experience. The book has not yet been published, but I sold the book, as a course pack, through the college bookstore to students taking my class. The course pack is cheap for the students and I receive a small royalty of $10 for each book sold. Hope one day to publish the book. Recently finished (8/2022) and copyrighted a b0ok on baseball. The book includes the fundamentals of each position, but is primarily focused on what happens between the offensive and defensive player's ears before each pitch is thrown. These intangibles are critical to good performance and moving forward to the next stage of baseball: High School, College, and, ultimately, professional baseball. I have a co-author who is a big inte34rnet junkie. His son is a catcher and he received a full baseball scholarship to the U of M in Dearborn, Michigan. We provided the book to several publishers who had some good suggestions but wanted a small fortune to proceed to publication. We therefore are in process of rewriting the book and incorporating some of the publisher's concerns. Life has, to some degree, interfered with completion. I've undergone hip and knee surgery, and my co-author has had many family issues to deal with. Our plan is to e-publish the book sometime later this year or early next year. The book has hundreds of internet URL's that supports the writing. I've been videoing Clay, my grandson, playing baseball since he was 5 years old. He has a passion for the game and excels in a number of areas. My co-authors son is the same. My son has spent thousands of dollars every year through high school to help Clay improve. Equipment, hitting lessons, travel, etc. How to minimize the costs and have a great journey is a big part of the book. We also include the basics required to achieve success and, hopefully, a full ride college baseball scholarship. The athlete and parents must maintain a positive mindset at all times and in all situations. I try to update this every year or two.
