Ron's Story

If you've seen my timeline, you know the story about where and when I attended school, but not why. So, here¿s the rest of the story. Life in Whippany was great for the most part, with good friends -- some of whom I still have to this day. However, near the time I graduated from middle school, my annual asthma attacks due to hay fever were keeping me from the first few weeks of school each year, and causing my parents much concern about my ability to breathe. Allergy shots didn't help much, so the doctors said for relief we should move to a dry climate like Phoenix. Therefore, in 1968, after just 1 year as a freshman in Whippany Park HS, we left NJ and headed west. In Phoenix, I found the promised relief from allergies. I also found Camelback High had new opportunities for me -- I became involved with the Civil Air Patrol and the school's concert/marching band (where we made a vinyl record!), and was introduced to electronics engineering by a great teacher. But Phoenix was too hot for my sister, who fainted several times while running outdoors during PE class. As the end of 1968 approached, I traveled with the marching band to play a half-time show at the Chargers/Chiefs game in San Diego (which the Chiefs won). I liked the cooler air there and didn't have any negative allergic reactions. With that influence and after a summer visit to the San Diego region, my family moved to Chula Vista, CA, a 'bedroom' community of San Diego, in late 1969. Hilltop High in CV was my third and final high school. I continued playing clarinet and my membership with the Civil Air Patrol through my 1.5 years at Hilltop and my 2 years at Southwestern College. In 1973, I started upper division courses at San Diego State University for a BS degree in electrical engineering. I made some more friends and enjoyed the great college! But wait, my family wasn't finished with moving me around yet! After one year attending SDSU, my folks decided to leave Chula Vista and retire to Santa Barbara. But I was only three fourths through college. Fortunately, UCSB was nearby with an excellent colleg...Expand for more
e of Engineering, and so I applied for transfer there and was accepted for what turned out to be 2 'senior' years. I graduated in 1976 from UCSB with the BSEE and moved 'back' to San Diego to work for an aerospace general contractor. With the benefit of employer compensation, I returned to SDSU part time to earn my MSEE. Meanwhile, during those single years with disposable income, I was able to fulfill my childhood dream of learning to fly an airplane, and enjoyed those privileges for a few years. During that time frame, I met my wife, a dedicated school teacher to this day. We became best friends first, and then married in 1982. (That was the end of my recreational flying!) Today, we still live in the San Diego area, and have one terrific daughter in San Francisco who carries on in her mother's tradition of educating tomorrow's leaders. My sister and her husband live just 2 blocks away; her yougest son is starting college at SDSU this fall.! My parents finally chose their final retirement years to be in Arizona (but farther north -- away from the Phoenix heat!). They made a beautiful home there and a few good friends and neighbors, but sadly, both of them passed away recently, within a year of each other. Since graduating UCSB, I've been proudly employed by 5 companies as an electronics engineer (thanks to early encouragement by great teachers!) and have been with my present employer, a leader in its field, for over 16 years. I've also been a member of Toastmaster International since 1988. So here we are in 2013. You knew where and when I went to school. And now, you know the rest of the story! If you remember me, please sign my guest book or leave a short public message -- a lot shorter one than this overview of my life to date. And if you care to re-establish contact with an old school chum, whether you're an acquaintance or a lost friend, please send me email through classmates.com and let me know what's been going on in your life. In any case, as Mr. Spock always says, "live long and prosper!" (There was a period when I might have been called a Trekkie!)
