Ronald's Story

School When I first checked out this website, it was out of curiosity to see if I could find out what had become of people that I had known long ago. As I read down the list of names, a flood of memories returned, some good and some bad. I could see the faces of long forgotten people in my mind’s eye as I remembered them from 30 years ago. It was quite a trip down memory lane. In any event, I never expected that my visiting this website would result in my writing a bio about my days at Watertown High, especially one that might be read by members of my class. High school was a very painful experience for me. In spite of my being involved in band and intramural sports, my anxiety & insecurities kept me from mixing well with my peers, and I always felt like I didn’t fit in. I had a tremendous amount of difficulty in dealing with the day-to-day pressures that high school kids put on one another. I made poor choices and had difficulty with relationships. My emotional turmoil became unbearable during my junior year, and I made the decision to leave school. I later regretted my decision, but only after most of that year had passed, and I returned to ask my guidance counselor to help me re-enroll. My guidance counselor, knowing me better than I knew myself, advised against my returning to regular classes. He pointed out that if I returned to regu...Expand for more
lar daytime classes, I would end up being a year behind my peers. His solution was for me to take night classes, and test for my GED in the spring of 1972. So, I followed his advice, and earned my GED in the spring of 1972. I got my diploma right on schedule (actually a little ahead of schedule), but I missed out on my junior and senior year with my class, and never got to be part of all that goes on during the last 2 years of high school. It didn’t matter to me then, but I regret it now. I never got to stand up with the rest of you at commencement, but I was nevertheless a part of the class of 72, and I remember many of the people who have added their names to this website. Workplace In the fall of 1972, I responded to an ad in the Watertown Daily Times for high school grads interested in “exciting health careers” at Mercy Hospital. The personal interview that followed found me being offered a position as a Mental Health Aide at Mercy’s Community Mental Health Center. That began my hospital career, and even though I briefly entertained other vocational prospects, I never got the hospital (or mental health work) out of my blood. I became licensed as a Registered Nurse in 1985, and I’ve worked as a psychiatric nurse for nearly 16 years. I currently am the Nurse Manager of the Department of Psychiatry at Community General Hospital in Syracuse.
