Ronald's Story
Everything began in 1950 in Flushing, Queens, NYC. I spent the early part of my life in Bayside, Queens in a suburban like existence in the most urban environment in the US. After my father was transferred to West Palm Beach, I ended up spending the rest of my youth at the beach, or to be more geographically specific Lake Worth FL. I graduated LWHS in 1968. I'd like to think I spent most of my time studying hard and getting ready for college. Unfortunately, as some of you will attest, I didn't come across as if I was doing all that much of that. Before long I realized that I needed to get serious about the rest of my life. Fortunately I was able to enroll in the school that was my first choice and so I was off to Florida Southern in Lakeland.
My four year on the Frank Lloyd Wright campus were quiet good. I enjoyed myself , but I wasn't the only one. I did get serous about my studies. Received academic honors, and a BA in history. I enjoyed the extracurricular activities as well, especially anything that had to do with political activism and government activities in general.
After graduation in 1972, I began a MA in History at Old Dominion University in Norfolk VA. Stayed there for a while and then transferred to Western Illinois University with a full graduate assistantship. Staying afloat with graduate assistantships and Masters Degrees became a way of life for a while. Those who have lived there know that Macomb, Illinios, the home of WIU, is conducive to such desires; it's just that mine was little more extreme than most. Anyway over the next decade I would finish with three Masters Degrees: History, Political Science and Sociology, and some fine work ex...Expand for more
perience as an archivist and curator. But truly I needed to do something different.
I wasn't finished with school... I still spent time at Columbia University refining my curatorial abilities, and @ the University of Iowa expanding my knowledge about educational institutions. And in the work world I began to transition to a position in higher education.
I moved to Ottumwa IA, home of Radar O'Reilly and proud of it, to teach at Indian Hills Community College and Buena Vista University. I taught classes in a variety of fields: history, political science, sociology, psychology, anthropology, and human relations. Eventually with this background in tow, I moved to my final employment endeavor, a professorship at Texas Southmost College and the University of Texas at Brownsville. Twenty years later, after teaching a variety of classes in the social sciences, serving as chair of my department and chair of university curriculum, I said so long to the work world. So in September 2010 I entered the ranks of the retired. Although that changed rather abruptly in the Fall of 2012. I was asked to return to teaching. So I am still engaged in academic work, as a Lecturer in the Government Department. At present I still live in Brownsville TX with my wonderful wife Edith, who is the greatest source of love, support and companionship, one could ever imagine. She remains in the work force teaching middle school. We have one daughter, Ronajae, who is a government employee who is saving us money!!! She's an Army auditor.
Well, that pretty well sums it all up. And pretty well explains how someone could be born in Queens and end up with an office overlooking the Rio Grande.
