Ron's Story

I grew up in Jonesboro, Arkansas. I graduated from Jonesboro High School in 1963 and Arkansas State University with a Choral Music Education degree in 1967. I entered the USAF in July 1967 following graduation and served 7 1/2 years. After almost 2½ years of training, I began my first real tour of duty at Wurtsmith AFB, MI as a B-52 Radar Navigator/Bombardier including time in Vietnam. Discharged February 1, 1975, to attend Asbury Theological Seminary (ATS) in Wilmore, KY. In addition to fulltime seminary, I served eight churches west of Louisville in Indiana. I spent 4 days and 3 nights in Wilmore and 4 nights and 3 days in Indiana. While there I got an MDiv degree, built a parsonage, left the parish full time and graduated from ATS in May of 1978. I was ordained '79 and have spent 38 years as a United Methodist pastor. In September of 1979 I began an 18-year tour as a Navy chaplain, retiring Aug 1, 1997 as a USN CDR. Returned to the North Arkansas Conference of the United Methodist Church to serve in Fort Smith, Rogers, Cherokee Village, and Batesville, Arkansas until 2006. During that time the conference merged and became the Arkansas Conference of the UMC. In 2006 the Un...Expand for more
ited Methodist Church put me on Incapacity Leave. We moved to Long Beach, Mississippi to be near family. July 1, 2012 I retired as an active United Methodist pastor though I still fill in and assist churches as well as e-mail weekly sermons to 73 families coast to coast. It's hard to believe that it's all over but the memories, the opportunity to travel all over the world, and the many friends I've met along the way. Connie and I met while stationed at Portsmouth Naval Hospital in Portsmouth, VA and were married May 5, 1984. We have 7 kids. I was a single parent and Connie a Navy widow. I brought 4 kids (1 deceased) and she 3 but we have never used the word step. They are all ours. 4 of the 6 unbelievably live within 10 miles of us. The other two are in Florida. But I do miss my HOME--Jonesboro, AR and wish I could attend the Class of '63's monthly dinners but... Many, many good memories though...all over this country and all over the world. I have been in 42 states and every continent but one...and I never want to go to Antarctica. If you ever find yourself on the Gulf Coast of Mississippi, give me a holler and I'll show you around. God bless. Ron Durham Class of '63 JHS and '67 ASU.
