Ronson's Story

I moved to Sylmar in the late summer of 1972. We lived on the corner of Borden and Herron St. My nieghborhood friends were Dewayne Rey who 3 years older than me, Kim Zenner was 2 years older than me. She also use to watch me and my brother and two sisters whenever my parents would go bowling, Mark Morris and Mitch Roberts and I would have knockout drag out fights whenever we played sports together. LOL. Steve Zenner, Frank Nanez, John and Matt Dimoude hung out on our block as well. In thouse days we played touch football and homerun derby and on summer nights we would play tag. Tag was a blast since my parents let us stay out until 10:00 PM. I attended Gridley Street Elementary School from 1972 through 1979. My good buddies back then were Robert Kutz, Dennis Phillip, Richard and Ray A. Dale Martinez, Ty Sales, Dennis Weber, Wesley Tanijuri, Dewayne Rey and Paul Cathers. Paul became my best friend and was my best man at my wedding. During that time I was a cub scout. We weren't your tuypical scouts! I had a few class crushes. In first grade through third grade I chased Suzan Pinkston. Suzan was wouldn't have any part of me because she was crazy for Robert Kutz who wasn't interested in girls at the time. In sixth grade Rose McAdams was my first girl friend. We use to work in the "Ball Room" together during recess. We would get together on and off for convenience sake up though my senior year in high school. My favorite teacher was Mrs. Barnes. I drove her crazy, but I could tell that she like me. As a student I was placed in gifted classes but, never truly applied myself. My focus was drawing which I had won a few art contests. During my third grade year I had left Gridley to go live with my Dad in Sun Valley. I attended Vinedale elementry. I was basically on my own. My dad was never around so I did a lot of hiking and bike riding. He owned horses and we would go ridiing from time to time but they were more work than they were worth keeping in my oppinion. To this day I do not have horses. I also had a paper route for the Valley Green Sheet. I played flag football at Sylmar Park and baseball at S.I.B.L. . I love hanging out with friends until the street lights went on. I also use to skateboard with Wess, Richard "Taco" McDonald, Tom Mason, Tony Dinco. We use to find abandoned houses with pools and or mowe lawns for people who had pools that were drained during the water shortage. We were the "Sylmar Skaters". I also rode my Redline BMX bike throughout the San Fernando Valley and Santa Monica Beach with Farley Magadia, George and Luise, Richard A., and Dealvin. After Graduating from Gridley, I went San Fernando JR. High. There, I continued to develop as an artist. I spent more time drawing pictures than doing schoolwork. I wasn't a very good student during Jr. High. I had three short-lived relationships with Wendy Rolkie Christina Gonzales and Shelley Paver. Shelley and I met at church camp. She chased me until I finally caved in. She was a wild one and her dad was our youth pastor, go figure. Other than that my friends were Steve Diaro, Shellie Dorman and a handful of acquaintances. I played Trumpet in the Jazz band and was kicked out of the class because I had a good ear but would read the music. Mr. Dale changed my part one morning and realized I wasn't reading a single note. He asked me what I wanted to do with my life and I told him that I wanted to play professional football. He wished me good luck and sent me to the councilor to switch my music class for a P.E. class. I was pretty hard headed! I went ahead and signed up to play tackle football for the North Valley Golden Bears. The Bears were known for having great teams and good coaching. t for the team. The head coach told me that cuts would have to be made since there were four 15 year olds. I was one of those boys. I worked my butt off. I was always first in drills and hit the blank out of anyone who came my way. When it came down to cut time I was released because the other two boys had played on his team last year. I was crushed! The coach then made a call to coach Burr of the Sun Valley Falcons, After I showed up on that field I was offered any position I wanted to play besides receiver and running back. For the Falcons I played center and middle line backer. I also played cornerback from time to time. When we played the Bears, I hit the snot out if them. Paul, who stayed with the team, has films to prove it. The Bears went on to win the Championship and were also selected to go to Philadelphia to play another championship team. They Lost! . I built my very first bike. It was a Red Line. When it was all said and done I think I paid over $500.00 for it. I used to ride it to school and store it in my P.E. teacher, Mr. Cameron's office. I could tell Mr. Cameron was impressed with the bike and the fact that I paid for it with my own hard earned money. He asked me how much the bike cost since his son was interested in getting a bike. In a very proud tone I told him it was too expensive for a kid to buy unless he had a job. I had no clue at that time that my P.E. teacher was Kirk Cameron's father. Kirk was a famous childhood TV actor from the late 70's-Today. I would race motto cross for NBA. I won three first place trophies with that bike just before it was stolen from me. My second biggest let down besides being cut from the Golden Bears football team. In late spring of my 9th grade year of junior high, I was recruited to play football for Sylmar High School by the varsity head, Tom Richards. I knew who he was threw me older friend, Dewayne Rey and John Lopez. They were 3 years older than I and had both played for him in their junior and senior years. My childhood dream was to play high school football. So when coach Richards approached me I must have impressed him when I said to him that I wanted to play varsity vs. "B" football. I told him that I grew up playing street football with Dewayne and John. He said I was crazy and I replied, yes I AM! I knew that he was crazy minded and wanted his players to follow. He invited me to attend spring football practice although I hadn't yet graduated from San Fernando Jr. High. Coach Richards tried to turn me into a quarterback that summer. I faild miserably. I was not smart enough. All I really wanted to do was hit someone. I ended up playing inside linebacker and guard. Football was my focus in high school. Coach Richards was a hard nosed coach who taught me a lot about myself as wall as prepared me for life down the road. My bestfrinds at sylmar were Shelly Dorman and Paul Cathers. Paul continued to set a great example of how to live a christian life while going through all high school stuff. I didn't always follow in his footsteps, yet I always had a heart for God. Shelly was my wild side friend. We caused more chaos than you could imagine. We always knew how to have a good time. We would go out with one another throughout high school whenever we weren't dating someone else or just wanted someone to kiss for the night. After high school I was a little confused with our relationship. I loved her deeply as a friend and was atracted to her at the same time. She on the other hand saw us brother and sister/kissing cousins. I finally back off in 1997 and realized that there was no future for us. Both Shelly, Paul and I played in bands together. We had a blast. I became a control freak and caused the band to flop.
