Roxanne's Story
Those of you who remember me might remember a painfully shy person, or one you might have thought of as an antisocial snob. The truth is, I march to the beat of a different drummer.
I'm originally from PA. My parents divorced when I was 4, and I lived with my mom and my sister at my maternal grandparents' house until '66, when my mom remarried, and we moved to Rochester. We enjoyed city living for 2 years, at which point we moved to Gates.
I didn't do much that could be considered "wild" in school. I suppose not many at my age and at that time were familiar with divination. I read Tarot and runes, and delved into various esoteric subjects. Years later, I discovered I had a dowser in my family, as well as a professional astrologer, and that my family background included what is known to the Pennsylvania Dutch as "Pow-wow".
I wanted to be a teacher when I grew up, but the need to make a living on my own outweighed my desire to further my education. College would have to wait. I worked various factory jobs, the longest being a six year stint at Eastman Kodak. I also worked for the US Postal Service, as a rural carrier substitute.
Do I have a hero? I have a few. Some who might strike you as off the wall, but who I count among my friends...Expand for more
, are actually some of my favorite authors from my high school days. Isaac Bonewits, Oberon and Morning Glory Zell-Ravenheart. The Monks of New Skete are my inspiration for how I raise my dogs, when I have them. Peggy O'Mara, the editor of Mothering magazine, has been my source for parenting advice for lo, these many years. My kids are my heroes, for stepping out of their parents' molds and being themselves. And my best friends, Alex and Shadie, for accepting me the way I am, and allowing me to do the same for them.
The one person from my past who I'd most like to see again is Robert May, because I've always wondered how the wild child of a minister actually turned out..
The most important obssession to me is genealogy. My first cousin once removed started researching our family tree. Another cousin did the same. I wanted to take our "traditional" family stories, and either prove or disprove them. Most I have been able to disprove, but have uncovered tales which are almost as interesting. I am currently working on 6 separate family files.
Life doesn't turn out the way you expect, at least according to the Story Wizard. What has been my biggest surprise? The fact that I have found love, over and over and over, where I least expect it.
