Roy's Story
From 1973 to 1986, I was active duty in the U.S. Air Force. My duty assignments were in Taipei, Taiwan; Okinawa, Japan; Osan, Korea; and Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. In 1986, I was hired out of the Air Force by a computer company. However, I stayed in the Air Force Reserves from 1986 until 1997. My entire military career was spent in the Intelligence and Information Technology fields.
From 1986 to 1993, my civilian employer was Martin Marietta Data Systems as an Intelligence and Information Technology specialist. A fancy term meaning I wrote software applications to store and analyze intelligence and other information.
From 1993 to 2009 (16 years), my civilian employer was Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC). Of course, it was in the Intelligence and Information Technology field. My last job title was Principal Knowledge Architect--a fancy name for someone who designs and builds databases and software applications for data management systems (DMS), information management systems (IMS), and knowledge management systems (KMS). I also wrote the systems' data management policies and standards regarding decision-making criteria and policies. These governed how data were extracted and processed into useful information. Information is only useful when it provides clients with available, on-time knowledge for enhanced decision-making purposes.
From 1995 to 2007 (12 years), I also taught undergraduate and graduate level Computer Science courses and undergraduate Math. In the summer 2007, my health took a turn for the worse and forced me to quit teaching. So I de...Expand for more
cided to quickly complete my PhD in Information Technology that I started in 2005.
I started my PhD degree with Capella University in 2005 and finally completed it in 2010. The last two years were difficult due to my bad health--I was forced to take medical leave from school twice (2 school terms--in 2007 and 2008). However, I persisted and, by January 2009, completed all my degree requirements, except for half of my dissertation. Luckily, I completed the corporate survey and data collection before my health nearly put a halt to my dissertation completion. I still had to write up the last 3 chapters.
Between January and April 2009, I survived 4 TIAs (mini-strokes) that caused other medical problems. And, by April 2009, I was on permanent disability. After 24 years of Air Force medical plus 23 years of civilian medical, my new cardiologist discovered that I had a congenital heart defect called Patent Forem Ovale (PFO). The PFO provided a more direct path for blood clots to travel to the brain--from the right ventrical directly into the left ventrical and into the brain. Thus, causing the strokes/TIAs.
After PFO closure (surgery), it took me a year to complete the important last 3 chapters of my dissertation. This included analyzing the data previously collected. At last, in April 2010, I earned my PhD in Information Technology Management.
Although, the TIAs/strokes appear to have stopped, the remnant physical and neurological damage remained. But, at least I am still breathing--even though I need a special medical device to ensure I continue to breath at night.
