Roy's Story

Life I live in California near a beach and work in the space industry as a technically informed bureaucrat within my company, part of the military-industrial complex. The company works on technology for intelligence work, but my personal intelligence may be evaporating over time. I have 2 sons born '91 & '95 so I obviously won't be retiring early assuming they go to college. The older one rarely grants me audience although he lives 1/2 mile away with his mom, who was my 2nd wife, in an ocean view house I remodeled mostly with my own labor, but no longer own. The younger son I adopted at birth w/ wife 2. He stays with me and my 3rd (and final) wife Karen (since 1/05) every second week along with her '92-born son who is with us full time. Her '86 daughter is in college and accepts my role in her mom's life at this point. We got a big house so the kids would each have a room, but two of them overnight rarely, so we've a spare and a nice office. Our best view is of sky we know to be over the ocean, seen through power and phone lines 20 feet from the back of the house. We did see fireworks in a small corner of that sky once. We somehow acquired 2 dogs, one of which did in a parrot we liked quite a bit. The dogs are sweet and endearing and mostly quiet, but occasionally destructive when left alone too long, a hazard as w...Expand for more
e both work. We're mostly not chatty types. An engineer (by training, I switched to administrative work 20 yrs ago),a CPA/accountant and offspring. No big entertainers here, but we can help the kids with their math. Skydiving was a long-term hobby that ceased with my second divorce or 3rd marriage. It was really fun at times through the 20 years I pursued it. I was on an 8-person team that took 3rd place nationally in formation skydiving in 1997; it was in a class for people who jump weekends as opposed to professionals. And I was part of the world's largest formation in Thailand in 2004. Lost bragging rights as a world record holder when it was eclipsed in 2006. It was more a hobby I enjoyed for the people and activity than a goal to accomplish, though. Those are some highlights. Current life with Karen centers on home, work, and kids. I still ride a motorcycle 7 miles to work most days, threading through cars as is allowed in this state. That gives me some excitement and speed. Retirement is on the horizon. We even bought a house in Fort Collins, CO as a probably place to live then. Meanwhile, I'm striving to balance enjoying what I have and can do while I can, yet save enough to have fun in retirement. I've created enough problems for myself to keep it interesting, but life has more good than bad for sure.
