Russ's Story
I went to junior college for a year after high school and my Father passed away on December 30, 1961. I joined the Navy in June 0f 62 and served as a Communications/Cryptologic Technician performing installation and maintenance of high tech electronic equipment for the next 22 years at various fixed sites, on surface ships and submarines and on some aircraft. Spent a year in San Francisco learning electronics and then to Portsmouth Naval Shipyard for additional training. From there I was as stationed in Washington, DC and attended some of the services when Kennedy was assassinated, and met my future wife. In Dec 64 I transferred to a ship off the coast of southern Africa and spent the next year cruising up and down both coasts and visiting many ports. Returned to the US in Dec 65 and was stationed in Winter Harbor, Maine for 6 months.
Decided to reenlist and got married in Jul of 67, attended school at the National Security Agency for 6 months and then headed to KamiSeya, Japan about 30 miles outside of Tokyo for the next 3 years with the wife. Got to travel the western Pacific and had 2 daughters. From there we went to Pensacola, Florida for 6 months of school and then to the Azores for ...Expand for more
2 years. It was a wonderful clean and backward island several hundred miles off the coast of Portugal. We lived on the base, but the town where our site was located did not have any electricity and had just installed running water. After leaving the Azores in 72 we went to Homestead, Florida for 2 years, then to Edzell, Scotland for 3 years. Located halfway between the cities of Aberdeen and Dundee on the North Sea it was a beautiful location with easy access to all of England and Scotland.
Upon leaving Scotland we were reassigned to Naples, Italy for 3 years, we lived within walking distance of the Mediterranean Sea, the food was fantastic and the tourism unbelievable. Upon leaving there we were reassigned to the Submarine Base at Groton, Ct where I travelled up and down the east coast. Virtually all of the commands I was stationed at are now gone due to the end of the cold war and made obsolete by technology advances. I would love to be able to tell you what we did as it was very interesting and important, but unfortunately it was and still is classified. I retired from the Navy in Sep 1984 and relocated to the Washington, DC area.
Will continue the rest of the story at a later time.
