Russell's Story

After CCHS, I made the rounds of most of the colleges in the Boston area, graduating from BSC and doing master's work at NU and UMass Boston. Worked for a while in advertising and then went into teaching. Back in '86-87, I received a grant from the MFA that allowed me to take a LOA from teaching and paint for a year. In '93, I left teaching to paint full time and made the mistake of starting an internet book business that took over my life for the next 25 years. I just sold off my entire inventory and am now working on my photography, painting and print-making full time. [In December, 2008, I was invited to exhibit in a show at the galleries of the School of the Museum of Fine Arts and have been invited back again for this year; and right after that, I was in a show at the Art Complex Museum in Duxbury, MA]. In addition to exhibiting four of my photographs at the Galleries at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts this coming November, I have an upcoming show of my paintings in February of 2010 at the Gallery at the Crane Library in Quincy, MA. Sports have always been a part of my life and after leaving Columbus, I had a two-day tryout with a fledgling football team in a fledgling football league -- on the invitation of Mike Holovak. Got myself worked over pretty well. I went on to play during my freshman year at BC, getting run over by the likes of Larry Eisenhauer until I messed up just before the first game and nearly injured QB John Amabile. I was "asked" to "get the hell out of here" by Coach Heferle. I continued to play football off and on until I was about 30. At that time, through my children, I got involved in soccer and helped start a men's soccer club in the South Shore League where I played until I was 45 and, when I left the game, held the record for most games played, never missing a single game. I also coached high school soccer. Two knee replacements now limit my sports activity to weight lifting, swimming and cycling. Love to travel but my wife and I haven't been able to get away for the past few years. I love London [3 times], Paris and Sedona, AZ. My life has been good. I have three great and successful children and seven wonderful grandchildren. Leaving teaching was one o...Expand for more
f the best decisions I made because, in major part, I've been able to spend a great amount of my time with my grandchildren [since May, one of my granddaughters has been working out with me daily at the Y], as well as travel freely. I'm married to the same beautiful, wonderful, intelligent and exasperating woman I married back in 1963, and I'm fortunate to have a couple of guys I've known for years who are true friends. Life has been a wonderful trip. I'd like to hear from you folks out there. 11/15/2016 UPDATE -- Not a lot has changed; still swimming almost every day; still exhibiting -- opening Thursday night at the School of the MFA invitational; in a show at the South Shore Art Center in Cohasset. Brigham and Women's Hospital purchased one of my photos for their collection. On December 12, I'll be giving a reading of my story, "The Corner," at the Whitman Public Library. "The Corner" was published in the anthology, Streets of Echoes, stories about growing up in the city of Boston. I've published two other stories over the past year and have published a limited edition "Artist's Book" titled "There is No Dam Now at Richford," based on a canoe trip with three of "the guys." [2017 update] My granddaughter Hannah graduated this weekend from Fitchburg State with a BS in BioMedical Studies. She is the first of my grandchildren to finish college. One of my grandsons will graduate from UMass in two semesters. I've finished the first draft and am working on the second draft of one of the three novels I have going. Yes, there's sections in it that have to do with CC. My wife is two weeks into her retirement from the DOJ and we have not yet strangled each other. Except the pains that come with aging, life is good. Since I last entered anything here, I have published two novels -- King & Train and Waiting for the Turk. I am just about finished with my third novel. I have also had numerous poems published in various Lit magazines around the country -- a large amount of my Jazz poems and Jazz-related art have been published in JerryJazzMusician -- you can google and find me. And, most importantly, I am about to become a great-grandfather. russelldupont @ comcast.net or harrytolland @ gmail.com
