Russell's Story
I lived in Richmond as a kid, but never attended Richmond High School. I did go to Arthur M. Charles Elementary (4th - 6th grades) and also Pleasant View Jr. High (9th grade), before moving to Ohio. I am interested in catching up with old friends from both of those schools, and also corresponding with anyone who attended RHS in the mid-70s!
My first job, (while I was in high school) was as a "roadie" for a professional sound reinforcement company (amplifying live jazz and rock performances). From there I got into theatrical set design and lighting.
I studied film at Minneapolis College of Art & Design, but dropped out when I got a chance to work in Hollywood, in motion picture production and post-production. From 1978 - the early 80s I worked on a lot of really bad sci-fi and horror films. It was a blast!
I moved to San Francisco, where I returned to college in 1984 to learn to use computers for graphic arts, with the intention of becoming a digital animator. I switched majors from design to geography, once I discovered the then fledgling, but quite fascinating field of GIS (Geographic Information Systems), for linking spatial data with maps.

ng firm, founded by former Stanford Research Institute personnel who mentored me in international consulting. In 1990 I pioneered the position of Staff Geographer at a multi-disciplinary environmental engineering firm, where I ultimately managed the CAD / GIS department.
In 1994 I founded my own consultancy and was immediately hired by my former employer and several former coworkers from that firm who had also gone off on their own. I continue to help a wide range of clients grow their businesses.
I am now an author and consultant in the field of geospatial information systems. I live in Portland, Oregon with my wife Ann. We enjoy traveling, but are usually at home with our faces in books, or laughing at dopey movies or TV shows...
I love the Pacific Northwest - the climate and the people are great. The Cascade Mountain Range, the Columbia River Gorge, great wineries and the Pacific Coast are only a couple of hours away, and the city of Portland is one of the best in the US. The old adage that "it always rains there" is an exaggeration, it actually rains more in Richmond (and many other places)! Ours is just concentrated in winter and spring - our summers and falls are GORGEOUS. Come visit!
