Sam's Story

After graduating from Somerset in June of '87, I attended IUP that fall to persue a degree in Finance. That first year was a whirlwind of drinking and debauchery. Then in my second year, I met a pretty young freshman. She got me to straighten up and actually open my textbooks. That was the fall of 1988 and we have been together ever since. I graduated from IUP in 1992 and got a job managing Wendy's restaurants in the Harrisburg area. Amy graduated the next spring. We were married within a couple of weeks on June 6 1992. Amy went to work for Polyclinic Medical Center as a registered nurse in the Emergency Department. In late 1992, I left Wendy's and went to work for John Hancock Financial Services as a financial planner. We moved from Harrisburg to York in 1995. In 1988, I grew frustrated with the "feast and famine" world of comission sales. I went to work for MBNA America in Hunt Valley, MD as a credit analyst. Amy grew tired of the 45 minute commute to Harrisburg, so she went to work for York Memorial Hospital, which was only about 15 minutes from home. After being married for more than 10 years, Amy and I realized that we were not going to have kids on our own without some help. We tried in vitro three times but without success. So in 2004, we started looking into adoption. We completed all the paperwork and went through all the hoops that the state requires. Anyone reading this that remembers me from high school will remember that I was always a pretty fat kid. After getting married in 1992, things got much worse. By early 2005, I topped the scales at around 500 pounds. Even though I had no real health problems, I decided to look at gastric bypa...Expand for more
ss surgery. I had the surgery in June of 2005 and since then, I have lost around 230 pounds. I now weigh around 265, which is still pretty heavy, but it is much better compared to where I was (see pics) In August of 2006, a year after Bank of America purchased MBNA, I decided to leave. I went to work for Paychex as a Client Service Supervisor in the Major Market Services devision in Owings Mills, MD. The daily commute is a real pain (about 70 minutes), but the company is great and the people are among the greatest I have worked with. Ironically, Amy went to work for Harrisburg Hospital. We live in a little town south of York called Loganville. I travel about 70 minutes south to work and Amy goes about 45 minutes north. Then in September 2006, we got a call from an adoption agency we were working with. We were told that there was a newborn baby boy at Reading Hospital and the birth mother was not interested in keeping him. He was born on August 30 2006, but was not due until November 5. Being so pre-mature, he was only 3 pounds and needed to stay in the ICU for a while. He came home with us on October 17 2006. We named him Lucas and the adoption was finalized on May 21, 2007. Since Lucas came into our lives, that has pretty much been the focus of everything. It has been two years since we brought him home and we are looking into starting the process again (if I can find the money... adoption is not cheap!!) I came onto the classmates site after finding out that our 20 year reunion was cancelled due to lack of interest. If anyone is interested in re-connecting with me, you can do so on this site, or on myspace. Just do a search for Sam Flick Thanks! Sam
