Sam's Story

Every now and then, Classmates informs me that someone has visited my profile. My guess is that many of those visitors got there by mistake – looking for one of the two Jerry Kleimans in our class (both great guys) or one of the two Kleins (who I don’t recall, but I am sure are equally great). For those who actually sought my profile, I appreciate that. I hope you realize that I am not a paying member and don’t know who you are. Whether reaching my site by accident or purpose, I thought it was time to update it. I still have the basic career positions – which reminds me I once did something useful – and my personal information – which, thank God, is the same and even richer. As for my career, I did defense analysis for a non-profit studies and analyses organization in the Washington area. I was the Vice President of one of the divisions for nine of those years. I then had an opportunity to become a Deputy Under Secretary of Defense for three years, and I participated in the inside game of the Pentagon. I ended my career doing studies and consulting. re in New Jersey, we moved to be near them. My other grandchildren are in the Cleveland area – so New Jersey won out, but it was close. I couldn’t entice either of my sons to move to Florida. I followed through with working on my genealogy. My mother wasn’t born in America and yet I now have discovered fourth cousins and my grandchildren’s sixth cousins. We lost people in the extended family in pogroms and the holocaust. My family search and bringing people back together is done in their memory. I am now 76 (as I am writing on 12/31/23). I know I have aged, and I am not as able as I once was, yet it is not what I thought seventy-six would feel like. I feel quite good relative to my grandfathers -- both of whom would have already been dead twenty years. At 65, my grandmothers were already walking slowly, a little bent over, and sitting in the park in the afternoons schmoozing. I stay active and minimize the schmoozing. I feel quite healthy; yet I must work at that with exercise and avoiding most foods I like. As I said in my first profile, I feel great gratitude for my education. New York City allowed a lot of us of very modest means to receive an outstanding education in the public schools and the City University. Stuyvesant both enriched me and humbled me. Sam Kleinman
