Sam's Story
Life
I was married in 1969;that marriage lasted 20 years; We had 2 children from the first marriage, P.J. and Jennifer. P.J. died of cancer at age 26. Jennifer is doing well working for the Federal Gov't. I married again and have 3 children, Isaac (15) is a top notch hockey goalie, Joseph(18) is in his 1st year at UBC and Ceilidh (20) is in her 3rd year at the University of Victoria..
I worked for an Airline(CP Air) for a period of 14 years, as a Supervisor and then went back to University (U.B.C. Law School) and got my Law Degree. After being called to the Bar in 1984, I worked for U.B.C. Law School for 6 years as the Director of the Native Law Program, teaching, tutoring and researching. I then left U.B.C.(I had failed in my marriage at that time) and went to Yellowknife in the Northwest Territories to work for the Chief Territorial Court Judge. I ran the Just...Expand for more
ice of the Peace Program, essentially teaching J.P.'s how to sentence people and do trials in their communities. It was probably the most interesting work that I had done to that point. In 1994 I left the Territories and with my new wife relocated to Parksville on Vancouver Island and began practicing law. I ran a sole practice in Parksville, doing everything from criminal law, family law, civil litigation to Solicitor type work i.e. conveyancing, wills, agreements etc. In 2006 I began working in the area of Indian Residential School Claims and am just finishing this area in 2014. My daughter Jennifer from my 1st marriage came and articled with me in 2011 and was called as a lawyer in B.C. in 2012. She currently practices law with me. We are moving into representing First Nations and Chief and Council. My wife Mary Ellen works as my Administrator in the Law Firm.
