Sam's Story

Life In 1978 I started at Berea College, where I graduated in 1981 with a BS in Agriculture. I met Dorothy (Terry) there, and we became a pair. Dorothy is from near Hindman, Kentucky. In January, 1983, Dorothy and I got married and moved to Pikeville, KY, where I started a job with the Kentucky Department of Surface Mining Reclamation & Enforcement (DSMRE). I was an inspector enforcing the regulations on coal mining (public law 95-87, passed under Jimmy Carter). Dorothy worked briefly for an accountant and then took a positiion at the then Pikeville National Bank. We bought our first motorcycle in 1986 (a Yamaha 600cc Radion), and spent many summer days riding around southeast Kentucky, often ending up a the Breaks Interstate Park. We first lived in a house we rented from the mother of one of my co-workers, and later bought a trailer and lived on Stone Coal Road. We became friends with Todd and Tammy Belcher and enjoyed many days boating and water skiing with them. In November, 1987, we moved to Big Stone Gap, Virginia, where I had taken a job with the Office of Surface Mining (OSM) as an oversite inspector, which basically involved overseeing the states enforcement of the coal mining regulations. Dorothy worked for an insurance company, and then got a job at the Virginia Department of Mines, Minerals and Energy. When we moved to Big Stone Gap, we took our trailer with us (how often ...Expand for more
can you move and take the house with you?). In 1989, we bought our second motorcycle, a Yamaha FJ1200, which we then proceeded to ride all over eastern Virginia (frequently ending up back at The Breaks!). We also enjoyed rides to Knoxville, TN to see the sites (mainly the fair). In 1991, I took a position with OSM's Abandoned Mine Lands (AML) program as a project manager, and moved to Wurtland, KY. With AML, I investigate, design, and fix problems caused by old coal mining sites (landslides, subsidence, coal refuse fires, underground mine fires, etc.) that are posing a threat to people and/or their homes. Dorothy took a job at Bellefonte Hospital in the Rehab department. We bought our first house in Wurtland, Kentucky, where we still live. We had our first child, Levi Brett, in 1997, and our second, Seth Allen, in 2000. They soon took over and have since became the focus of our lives. As of 2006, I still own the FJ, and although it's getting a little old now, it still runs good and gets me around. Dorothy quit working when Seth was born, focusing on the family. The boys are 10 and 7 years old, and are enrolled in the Raceland-Worthington School System, 5th and 2nd grades. Dorothy is now a substitute teacher at the Raceland-Worthington school system and really enjoys it. I sold the FJ1200 last year and now own a 2007 FJR 1300 and I'd enjoy riding more if it would quit raining so much!
