Samantha's Story

Life Graduated Purdue University, BSCEM 1998. School I don't think I would ever want to do highschool over again. I loved ROTC and all the drill meets we attended through the years. I wouldn't have gone to prom with a date - I would have gone by myself or just stayed home. If I had to do it all over again, I would not have cared so much about other peoples opinions and I would have spent more time being myself. College Most of my pals were guys. I remember failing first semester calculus with Jeremy. We met on the first day of class and became good friends, didn't really pay much attention to class. The following year we pulled out our notebooks from calculus and no wonder we failed- we were too busy writing each other jokes during class. And I'll never forget how hard it was to say good bye to Ryan when he left to join Kim in Africa, and how much I couldn't wait to see them both when they came back to the US a happily married couple. And my ex-fiancee - my only regret about college. I loved him dearly, but should have called it quits after the first year. Roommates were interesting, albeit slobs. I remember the first time I thought for sure that I was a real college student - on a friday night working on a physics lab report eating ice cream and drinking beer.... And I'll never forget structural steel design. I thought for sure I was bombing that class so the night of midterms I downed ...Expand for more
a couple (ok 3 or 4) shots of Jack Daniels and finished the test in 45 minutes flat conviced that I had failed for sure. Only to find out that I got the third highest score in the class! Now if only I figured out that I do better on exams after a few shots I might have been on the deans list! Workplace I've been working in the heavy highway construction industry since starting at Purdue. It's been unique and exciting and I can't imagine doing anything else. While at school I had to intern to earn my degree, I spent time outside of Washington DC building houses - that was boring. Then I went to Cincinnati to work on the Olean plant - that stuff they put in WOW chips - don't eat it!!! Then I spent time in Cape Girardeau on a paper mill. I started out in Salt Lake City after graduation on I-15 reconstruction in preparation for the 2002 winter olympics. Salt Lake is such a beautiful place, but a very closed society. Everyone almost is mormon, and they marry young. I thought that I would never get a date in that town, let alone meet my future exhusband. I'd meet women there my age and they'd have 4 or 5 kids already. It was unreal. From there I went to Las Vegas and worked on the monorail that runs between all the casinos. Then I went to work as an estimator bidding new project in St. Louis. I love the places that I've been and the people that I've met, and I can't imagine doing anything else.
