It all started in April of 1996... Basic Training at Lackland Air Force Base, TX in the 321st Training Squadron for 6 weeks. Then off to Sheppard AFB, TX in the 366th Training Squadron for nearly 4 months to learn how to be an electrician/ lineman apprentice. After that I was stationed at Nellis AFB, NV in Las Vegas where I completed the rest of my 4 year enlistment.
In 1998 45 of us from my squadron (99th Civil Engineers) deployed to Prince Sultan Air Base in Al Kharj, Saudi Arabia. We spent 4 months in the desert in the middle of summer with temps reaching 138 degrees in the shade on the hottest day. ot long ground rods into the hard sunbaked desert floor for a satcomm grounding ring. We had to use pneumatic jack hammers and even then half of them only went into the ground a few feet. I remember getting burned by the jack hammer when my arm touched it after it had been sitting in the sun for only 15 minutes. It left a red mark on me for 2 weeks! I could go on and on about my time in Saudi but I think I'll save it for now. I think that was my most memorable time in the Air Force. I learned alot about my job and a little about the culture of the middle east and made some friends that became like brothers. Two years after that I was a civilian again and now it's been eleven years (april 07) since I first joined the AF. How time marches on...
