Samuel's Story

Life My Spouse I went on a blind date with a telephone operator who introduced me to her younger sister at my home in Lexington park, MD. I ended up dating the younger sister and finally married her. Even my father thought she was the most interesting woman he had ever met. I always wanted to be a aviator when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was a great idea. As it turns out, they were right. I have spent many happy hours alone on my boat in the Potomac River, drifting and fishing and watching the sunset. I have had several mentors during my career but two stand out as great men. Russel Stetler gave me the opportunity to demonstrate my potential as a leader and decision maker, and the confidence to go above and beyond. Master Chief Petty Officer William R. Gardiner accepted me as a colleague in a Navy program that had the ability to influence great change and he taught me the meaning of sacrifice and endeavor for the common good. He also made me proud to have served my country. The one person from my past who I'd most like to see again is my father Samuel R. Pistachio, Sr., because I never had the chance to say goodbye and I want to tell him I love him. If I could improve my home, I'd remodel my master bathroom and add on a larger rec room. My dream home would be a simple rambler with a large porch that overlooked the ocean in a warm climate, perhaps somewhere like the Caribbean. I've learned to be more tolerent, more patient, and the meaning of true love. I also learned that being a father means you must learn how to cry and still be a man. My father always said that when I was ninety years old and my children were seventy, they would still be my children. What he meant is that you never stop caring for their well being or safety. If I won $100 million, I'd give most of it to the needy because money is only good for the happiness you can buy with it, then spend the rest on my family, my friends and then I'd spend the rest traveling the world seeking high adventure. Fortunately my only college courses were off campus but I did spend a lot of my younger life in a Navy dormitory if that qualifies. I witnessed many interesting activities there because the military society is just a microcosm ...Expand for more
of civilian life anyhow. My current age is 68. When I was 12, I thought that people my age now would be ready to cash in their chips. I was so completely wrong because if your health is still good at my age, there is nothing you can't accomplish if you put your mind to it. In fact, older people have the advantage of a life experience to lean on to make the intelligent decisions.. I would like to publish my book because there are many of my hometown friends in it as characters and if they read it they would recognize themselves as I remember them. My best friend would tell you I'm bold and daring, but people who don't know me very well would probably describe me as quiet and reserved but very polite. I share my home with my wife, my daughter, and my three grandchildren, which I find very active but sometimes chaotic. The most memorable trophy was a plaque awarded to me by the Commanding officer of the Rotary Wing Test Division for Test Technician of the year in 1993. I was selected from a group of fifty or so co-workers because of my outstanding work performance and contribution to our mission. I remember getting a standing ovation from the entire organization and it made me very proud because most of them were my peers. In 10 years, I hope to be still alive because I have so many things I still want to accomplish. I'm going to get there by the grace of God and my will to live. My oldest friend is Loren Cole who still lives in Ellwood City. We met as children because we were neighbors and after we graduated we both joined the Navy. He returned to Ellwood to live and work and I set out to seek my life in a different direction. Over the years we stayed in touch and when we visit my mom in Ellwood, he always stops by and we talk about our childhood and our teenage days and also talk about the future. My first job was at Loccisano's grocery store, where I got paid $1.00 and hour to stock shelves and bag groceries. What I remember most about it is the family atmosphere of the store and my mentor, Emma Loccisano. I have so many wonderful memories of my childhood that it would take an entire book to cover them so I recommend that you read my novel when it comes out and you will see what was so dear to my heart.
