Samuel's Story

Life of Samuel Swenson Jr. I was born in Tulare CA, Nov 4, 1939 and have been on the move ever since then. Moved to Hermiston OR. while My father was in the Merchant Marines on 3 ships during the war 1941 to 1945 where one of the ships was hit Japananies planes. It was hard for my dad to settle down in one place after the war. We moved to Tacoma WA 1945 to 1949, I went to Rogers Elementary Kindergarten, first, and second grades and lived on 2714 Cherry St. Tacoma WA I was 10 years old when we moved to Jamestown KS 1949 to 1950, My dad had two restraunts / taverns and also worked on my grandparents farm. We lived in downtown Denver where dad own a novelty shop, Went Cherry Creek Elementary School. Moved to Grand Junction, then to Monte Vista and Palisades CO from 1950 to 1951, Then on to Kennewick WA 1951 to 1952, Dad worked as a baker for Sigmans bakery From 1952 to 1954 we stayed Yakima dad worked for Sigmans bakery, We lived in Tieton picked apples, and Naches. We moved to Ellensburg WA, worked for Safeway bakery. We moved to Moses Lake WA from 1954 to 1955, My dad worked for Safeway as the manager of the Bakery. Then My Dad had the only bakery in Othello WA from 1955 to 1959. I played Football, Basketball, Wrestling, some Track and Baseball, also worked in the spud nut donut shop and Potato sheds in the summers. also worked for union pacific on refrigerator railroad cars. In School, I liked Coach Mel Thompson. I did not finish high school. I went into the Navy August 30, 1957 went through Boot Camp CO 329, San Diego CA Transferred to the USS Vega AF-59 until Nov 3, 1960 made BM3 Reenlisted Dec 1960 on Treasure Island. Transferred to Tachikawa Japan AFB assigned to Air Transport Squadron Seven Detachment 7 Alpha, (VR-7 Det "A") duties Bks MAA, armory, ASDO and flight attendant. I got my High School GED. It was then I Meet my wife Joan (Vikki) H. Buffington at the Tachikawa base exchange. I was going to watch a band play and she was there, We had great time and 6 months later on July 2, 1963 we were married. In 1964 I was transferred to Port Hueneme CA to the Seabees MCB-10. Later TAD to Guam for 6 months. Came home and 6 months later TAD to Okinawa then mounted out a ship and made over the beach landing with the USMC in Chu LAI Vietnam. Where our oldest girl Teresa was born Oct 7, 1965, She is married and has two girls and lives in Cheyenne Wells CO now and operates the Trails inn. I was assigned to US Naval Mobile Construction Battalion 10 we deployed to Guam for 6 months in 1964 I was a Barracks MAA and also painted the Fuel Pipeline and in 1965 the battalion made an over the beach landing with the Marines. While I was in Vietnam I was in security and also worked for Bravo Company. Also took care of the first Female in the Seabees Her name was Boo Boo and she was a Vietnamese Sun Bear that we donated to the San Diego Zoo. I Transferred to Naval Air Station Pensacola FL assigned to Port Services as AVR Rescue boat coxswain and pre naval seamanship instructor, Promoted to BM2, transferred to VADM Hayward staff as driver. Where my daughter Darlene Joelle was born Feb 6 1967. She is married and has son and has retired after 24 years in the Navy and E-7 (Navy Chief) living in Kapolei, HI with her husband who is an retired E-8. She is now working for the Navy again. station was to Da Nang South Vietnam 1968 to 1969. at first I was a LCM-8-823 coxswain when my boat got damaged was sent back to Da Nang, After my boat was repaired I was assigned as LPO Lighterage Division Cau Viet, 105 men, 18 LCM-8s, 12 LCM-6 and 6 Fuel barges. I was promoted to BM1. received the Bronze Star with combat "V" Transferred to the USS Samuel Gompers AD-37 from 1969 to 1971. My Division had 18 men and worked the Portside of the ship. My duties were 2nd Division LPO, work center Sup. and MAA. Also worked for repair Department making safety nets and weapons handling slings Transferred to the USS Stein FF-1065 from 1971 to 1974. Plank Owner. Deck Div. LPO and work center Sup. Transferred to San Diego CA Naval Training Center Administrative Command as BEQ manager of the 500 series and the two 600 series. I was promoted to BMC and was selected for WO1, 3 months later. I was there from 1974 to 1975. Transferred to the USS Thomaston LSD-28 as the Ships Boatswain from 1975 to 1978. I Made BMCS & Discharged and Promoted to CWO2. I had many other duties. The first Division and Second Division Officer. stood OOD in port and JOOD underway. Ship workforce supervisor (Division Officer) about 105 men. also the Tool Control Officer during the overhaul. Transferred to Naval Station Guam from 1978 to 1980, Port Services Officer the first year and the Port Operation Officer the second year. My son Samuel III was born Nov 5 1978. He is out of the Navy after 4 years and was living on his own. I was promoted to CWO3. I had 19 different duties. Transferred to the USS Protues AS-19 ships boatswain and 1st Lt from 1980 to 1982. Transferred to Weapons Station Indian Island Hadlock WA from 1982 to 1984, I promoted to CWO4. where the youngest daughter Nicole Lynn was born Jan 8, 1983 and is working and living in Atoka, TN She has girl and boy. Transferred to the USS Camden AOE-2 as the Ships Boatswain from 1984 to 1987, Was I retired from the Navy on Dec 1, 1987. In Jan 1988 I started Collage with Southern Illinois University extension at the Bangor Naval Base for one year and was on the dean's list for that year, then went to Olympic Collage and Bellevue for my under graduate classes. By 1990 I was just about done when I had my first Job interview and had to put some of my classes on hold so I could start working for the Washington State Department of Transportation. I completed my required Collage courses and Graduated from SIU with a Bachelors Degree in Science 1992. Majored in Education and Safety My first Job was the I-90 Safety officer and First Aid Trainer about two years after that I was assigned to the Regional Safety Office as Regional Safety Officer. In 1998 I was promoted to Northwest Regional Safety Manager for the Washington State Department of Transportation. In 2004 and Due to bad health (Heart) problems I retire from State service as of November 30, 2004. I'm doing a garden and some land scaping around the house. I have been going to reunions now and having a good time and have notice that our friends are getting older. LOL I volunteer for the United States Submarine Veterans Bremerton Base as the Publishing Editor for the Puget Soundings Newsletter and the manager of the USS Bonefish (SS-223) Parade Float. On November the 4 2019 I turned 80. More changes to come work harder
