Sandra's Story
Life
April, 2005.
I moved to Kodiak in 1978 with my husband and young son. We had two more children, a daughter and a son. My daughter died from Hodgkin's lymphoma when she was 22 in 2001. My husband of thirty years died this past summer (2004) from cancer. My youngest son recently passed away (March, 2005)at the age of 22. My oldest son started his last quarter at the Evergreen State College in Olympia the end of March. Now I live a quiet peaceful life with my dog, teaching third grade at the local parochial school as the token Protestant.
My sister's family is still in the Seattle area, so I usually make an annual trek to visit them. However, this year I'm going to Boston and on to Vermont, so my sister will be coming north to see me in Kodiak.

e I spent an extended amount of time in the Seattle area (six months)I was surprised at how little rain there was. Since Kodiak is an island, we depend on planes and boats for transportation to the mainland. The ferry trip is 10 to 13 hours long depending on if it is traveling to Seward or Homer. Ocean, mountains, bears, and fish plus the nickname Emerald Isle of the North Pacific sums up Kodiak. People have also squeezed in a few coffee shops and fast food places in the past ten years.
Workplace
I've been working at St. Mary's School for the past 17 years and expect that I'll be there for a few more years. My first class was a 7th and 8th combination, then I went to a first/second combination class (for about four years the school did not offer 7/8). Since then I've taught either second or third grade.
