Sara's Story

LIFE Since moving out of my folks' home in Anaheim at 18, I have lived in many CA locations, including Aptos, Corona del Mar, Fullerton, Newport Beach, Balboa Island, Old Town Orange (my favorite, so far), and now in San Clemente. I also lived for eight months in beautiful Portland, OR, but soon found I couldn't tolerate the gray skies, so back to CA I came. My love for CA began when I was just a kid living in the San Gabriel Valley (Sierra Madre, Monrovia). I remember a clear winter's morning after a heavy rain. The storm had washed away the then very heavy smog revealing a spectacular snow-covered mountain looming high above our neighborhood. It was breathtaking; I'll never forget it. Our family took many day trips to arboretums, museums, historic & wilderness sites, and camping trips to beaches, mountains, and desert. All added to my appreciation for our great state. After traveling through and living - including Japan (8 mo.) and Korea (1 mo.) - in many locations internationally, each experience not only increased my love for travel and cultural diversity, but also my appreciation for the beautiful place I've called home all these years. There's only one other place on earth that competes with California for my affections. In 1999 (and again in 2007), a visit to the Holy Land touched me deeply, especially knowing that we were walking where Jesus walked. I loved the sense of time that just hung in the air, a mixture of all that came before and is to come. I met such good people there - including Zeev, a friend to this day, and Arale, deeply missed now that he is gone. The landscape, weather, west coast seashore, and so many things felt like home. But it was the spiritual sense of "home" that really captured my heart. I loved "walking where Jesus walked." During the summer of 2000, eight friends and I visited Amsterdam, Paris, London, Edinburgh, and the surrounding countrysides. I really enjoyed the people, art, and architecture, and the amazing gardens (especially Claude Monet's Giverney, France, and Parade Gardens in Bath, England). Terry, who led our group, passed away not long after our return and I'm so happy to have spent that special time with him. In 2005, I completed a mission's trip to Swaziland, Africa, helping to plant immune-boosting vegetable gardens, and caring for a few of the thousands of orphans due to the worst per cap HIV/AIDS infection in the world (50%). Despite sad circumstances, my spirit connected with the Swazi's joy, and I pray for the daughter-of-my-heart, an amazing head-of-household girl (then 10 years old) named Pepelei (and her sister Elizabeth) every day. In 2007, on a second mission trip to the wonderful Dominican Rep., we helped Rozio y Vincente build their family a home. Despite the heat, humidity, and hard work, it was fantastico! Then, in 2011, a bunch of us from church brought the prefab sections of three loft houses down to Ensenada, Mexico, and put them together, painted, them and left housewarming care packages for three young, deserving families. I'm the proud aunt of 10 awesome nieces and nephews and six great-nieces/nephews (the closest I'll come to being a mom or grandma!). Those whose loss has most affected my heart are friend Peter (when we were 8 yrs. old), my wonderful dad (at age 55), my dear mom (at age 84), my former business partner Jim (at 43), my darling godson Shane (at 21, the son of classmate/dear friend Judi Conway-Barkman), and more recently, sweet friend Arale (at 59), plus my amazing cat Rosie (at 11) and my doggie-daughter Lily (at 18!). I also miss Grandma & Grandpa Capel, who lived full lives into their eighties. My only life regret is not finding a soul mate and having a family. However I do have the most lovely memories of a poet, a cowboy, a fireman, a musician, and a fisherman. Having someone to share life would be wonderful, though I have come to appreciate the freedom of singleness. As I travel life's uneven path, I find faith to be my most important asset, and friends, family, and fur-children to be my greatest blessings. SCHOOL In all of our lives there are times when we feel the most confident, expectant, and hopeful. The high school and college years were those for me. But, first came elementary school. Though I struggled a bit with my confidence back then, I also have some good memories from those important years, mostly because of exceptional teachers who took the time to connect. My favorites included Mrs. Benzango (3rd grade, Monroe Elem.), Mrs. Klevitz (4th grade, Walter Elem.), and Mr. West (6th grade, Walter Elem.). What all three teachers had in common was an ability to see children as individuals and to encourage each child's blossoming gifts, skills, and abilities. Jr. High was really hard for me. Despite being one of the youngest in my class, I was one of the tallest and very self-conscious about it. I spent lunchtimes alone most every day, and tried my best to keep smiling. It was quite healing when, years later, I attended a Loara High School reunion with dear friend Lee Wettengel, and during the evening many former Trident Jr. High classmates recognized me and shared happy memories of our times together. Though I had felt so self-conciously alone in Jr. High, I came to realize that there had actually been classmates who had thought of me as their friend. It gave me a completely new and more positive perspective on what I had experienced during those awkward years. It was high school where I came into my own. Once I arrived at Magnolia and became reacquainted with many of my Walter Elem. classmates (Gloria Armenta, Gloria Crosby, Sherrie Moffitt, Debbie Pai, Sue Simon, Sue Williams, etc.) and their new friends from Dale Jr. High, life got so much better. As others matured and grew taller, I felt better about myself and no longer like an outsider. The wonderful friends that I will always cherish from those memorable high school years are those listed above, plus Judi Conway, Sally McFadden, Kitty Thurman, Doris Lucas, Maureen O'Shea, Debbie Smeltzer, Clarinda Jones, Garry Lindquist, Rich Glaab, Mark Wexler, Howard Goldstein, John Maio, Ron Salazar, Charlie Richie, all the gals in G.A.A., Jerry Ryan and the other class officers with whom I served, and many more. Others from our class that I came to know better after high school were Barry Walden, John White, Ed Del Hoyo, Ken Murray, Lynda De Avila, Debbie Deline, Greg Reynolds, and those on the reunion committees. Though, sadly, I've lost contact with many of my dear friends from the school years, I still think of them often. I've enjoyed catching up with some at...Expand for more
Magnolia '71 reunions (the 40th was a blast in 2011 with so many great classmates in attendance), and occasionally see and exchange e-mails with Kitty, Debbie D., Lynda D., Barry P., Howard, Rich, Garry, John, and Mark. And my bestest long-time friend is Judi (Conway) Barkman; we get together often, and talk or e-mail almost daily. COLLEGE My first and probably most fun year of college was spent at Cypress College. My best memories are of taking all my classes with high school friend Sally McFadden (and getting good grades in a personal competition with my high-achieving friend!). Sally, Judi Conway, others friends and I went to nearly all the football, basketball, and baseball games. It was especially fun because so many guys from Magnolia were on the teams (John Maio, Charlie Richie, Ron Salazar, Ken Murray, etc.). In my sophomore year, I transferred to Cabrillo College in Aptos (just south of Santa Cruz), and was there during a scary time - the area was then considered the "Murder Capital of the World"! But, I remained kind of clueless and enjoyed my time there. My friend Debe (a Disneyland co-worker) and I shared a really great house on a street just up from the beach, and we had such a fantastic view of the ocean. I think it only cost us about $175 total per month! Debe and I met lots of cute guys, and when I ran out of grocery money about a month before I came home, I found out where all the free "happy hours" buffets were. :-) I discover I had a resourceful side that hadn't been tested before. However, I sure was relieved when my family came to pick me up at the end of that semester. The second semester of my sophomore year was spent back at Cypress. Then I started my junior year at Long Beach State. However, when I realized that Cal State Fullerton had a better communications dept., I transferred there the following semester. Though I was a Communications major, I especially enjoyed all the dance classes I took at Cal State. My favorite was African Dance. The highlight of that experience was having our class perform in front of a large gathering at a United Negro College Fund benefit. The most fun I had during my college years was hanging out with old friends from Magnolia and new friends from Disneyland. However, the two good friends I did make at college were Tony DiThomas and Rob Dill. I met them both at Cypress. Tony and I reconnected in communications classes at Cal State. A highlight is when we buddied up to do our senior project and were able to get a couple of media heavyweights to come for our presentation. That was the only time I ever received an A++! Rob and I reconnected years later through a mutual friend, found out we went to the same church, and hung out for awhile. Roommates during college were Debe, then Becky and Kathy, and then, for three years, Cyndi and Stephanie - all friends from Disneyland. What great roommates I had - so many wonderful memories of that special time. "Those were the days, my friends. We thought they'd never end..." It took me two years to complete my freshman and sophomore years, then two years to complete my junior year, then four years to complete my senior year! I was just having too much fun taking semesters off to go skiing to finish on time. Subconsciously, I think I didn't want to grow up. However, when I finally graduated in 1979, I was so relieved. With a college degree in hand and the experience I had gained working at Disneyland, I was accepted immediately into The Walt Disney Company's management intern program, and off I went to start a career working for Mickey Mouse! WORKPLACE I joined the work force as a babysitter when I was just ten years old. :-) Though I was young by most standards, I appeared much older, so that must have counted for something to those who entrusted their kids to my care. I loved having my own money to spend as I chose. I was only 17 when I graduated from high school, so I used that as an excuse to postpone getting a real job and had the best summer of '71 possible. I went to the beach almost every day and subsisted on snow cones and salads to look my best for my freshman year in college. When I turned 18, my mom hinted, "Disneyland is hiring, dear." (I think she was afraid that I would never enter the job market and that she would have me at home until her dying day. :-) So, in the spring of '72, I started working for Disneyland at the Plaza Inn as a cashier and Golden Girl (a hostess in a turn-of the-century costume). What fun that job was. Many of my dearest friends, today, are those I met while working at the Plaza Inn (Cynthia Fransen-Perkins, Stephanie Hansen-Wall, Pam Conway, Debe Lowe-Detwiler, Ginny Wilson-Hegen, Candy Morrow-Paul, etc.). In 1976, I had the honor of being chosen to serve as a Disney University Leader, helping to train new "cast members." Later that year, I was transferred into Main St. attractions and worked in both "Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln" and the parking lot - two really different jobs, but both were fun. I also had great times with the new friends I met in attractions, many of whom have remained dear friends (Lee Wettengel, Roxanne Brandt, Mary Conway-Jacobsen, Gail Brown, etc., and recently reconnecting with many via facebook including Jeanne Newkirk, Wes Beavers, Charlie Almand, Sandi Bauer, Nanci Arnoldi-Coleman, Milt Clark, Joe Alvarez, Nancy Rodewald, and more). I miss those from Disneyland with whom I've lost touch (Jim West, Owen Gunter, Becky & Craig Freeman, LeeAnn Clark, Kent Hollowell, etc.) I never missed being in a college sorority because the social life of Disneyland employees at that time was beyond compare. The parties and sports teams (softball, volleyball, canoeing, etc.) were plentiful, and there were always groups going skiing or to the river, the movies, Las Vegas, etc. Too much fun! Then, sadly, I had to grow up... :-) After receiving a BA in communications in 1979, I was accepted into the management intern program at Disneyland. All of my jobs since have been writing, editing, designing, and/or producing positions. I worked for The Walt Disney Co. (16 yrs.), in children's media (7 years producing videos, books, TV shows, etc.), and now for a Christian non-profit (since '94 as director of communications). The high points in my career so far include working overseas in Japan (8 mos. in '83), Korea (1 mo. in '91), and Israel/Palestine (4 weeks total, in '99 & '07). I absolutely love my current job and the people with whom I work. In looking ahead, maybe I'll be out of the office and into some kind of missions work or outdoor ministry. Only God knows. :-)
