Sara's Story
I hate writing stuff like this! IâÂÂm single, been back up in Anchorage, since January 2006. I went to school to get a degree in Interior Design. I got accepted into DUâÂÂs School of Architecture; but because of scheduling conflicts that didnâÂÂt work out the way I wanted it to. About three years ago I was having issues with my heart or so I thought. I would have between five to six major heart episodes during one year. So bad that I would have to leave work and talk about the feeling of dying. I ended up having to go to the Cardiologist to figure out what was going on. After the full gauntlet of test my doctor told me I was fine that there wasnâÂÂt anything wrong with my heart. I asked him why my heart would race like it does and feel like itâÂÂs going to beat out of my chest. His response was âÂÂhold your breath for 15 â 20 seconds and bear down like you are going to the bathroom and that will even out your pulseâ WOW and thatâÂÂs why you get paid the big bucks!!! The next time it happened I left work and called a shrink because if my heart was fine then I had to be going crazy! ;) (Shut it!!!) nxiety Disorder. SURPRIZE!!! The part that you didnâÂÂt know is I grew up in a very abusive home. Both my parents were abusive. I also was raped when I was 12 and then again when I was 22.

There are a number of things that I want to accomplish.
1. Bringing awareness to the importance of mental health and early intervention. 1 in 4 people deal with some sort of mental illness. You arenâÂÂt alone
2. I want to use my experience to bring light to what happens when the cycle of abuse isnâÂÂt stopped and the struggles that a survivor has to take to regain their lives.
3. I want to go into schools and talk to kids about sexual assault and to let them know there is hope and life can change.
4. I want to talk to educators about sexual assault and what they are missing.
5. I want to talk to mental health providers to shed light on therapy from a person with a mental illness, also the importance of service dogs and how they can save and change a personâÂÂs life.
6. I want to work with legislators to revise and change laws on mental health, service dogs, child abuse and many more areas.
