Sarah's Story

Life I have 8-year-old twins. One boy, Wiley. And one girl, Lydia. My mom got her wish. Lydia is like me, on steroids. She is like I am now. She skipped the whole shy phase and jumped right to the type-A take-on-the-world phase. Wiley is a gentle soul. It is true what they say about twins. They love each other more than they love anyone else. They are lucky to have each other. It gives me comfort to know that they have that. We have an old, grumpy russian blue cat. I fear he is not long for this world. His brother died on 9/11. We also have a few Tonkinese cats that are just turning a year old. A couple of them used to hang out in the office. But, these cats are so friendly (which ordinarily would be a good thing) that they spent more time on our keyboards than we could stand. So, since I only live a block from the office, they came home to live at my house. I lost my dad before my kid's first birthday. Anyone who knows me will probabably know that he was my hero. He died just after July 4th from a complication from heart surgery. He was home and I was with him the day before. I was back in Philadelphia for one day and I had to turn around and go back to Harbor springs that evening. It was really tough. My mom survived stage 4 breast cancer and she is doing well and having a great time up in Harbor Springs. My brother, Peter, has turned out to be a fantastic and successful attorney. Who would have expected? Certainly not me. But, my little brother has worked to rescue me from several legal tangles. I am extremely proud of him and impressed by his success. He continually wows opposing attorneys with his fair, direct, but elegant strategy. I am certain he will continue to be super successful. If you are in Chicago and you need an attorney, trust me you can't do better. And, I am a harsh critic (especially of him). I got lucky e...Expand for more
nough to marry the smartest guy I have ever met, Charlie. He programs computers for a living and he jumps in when other programmers can't figure out what to do. He works with me now that I own my own company. But, he had to rescue my projects a few times when my technology partners were unable to solve problems when I worked for public companies. I have yet to find a problem he can't solve. We have been married for 15 years. A funny thing, I knew the day I met him that I would marry him. In addition to being smart he is also fun, funny, good looking, and sweet. Like I said, I got lucky. I remember that every day. At the end of 2003 I quit a perfectly good job with my best friend, a colleague at Mercer HR Consulting, Frank Roche. The next day we started our own consulting company, iFractal. For those of you who are into math, this might make sense... in iFractal the i is for interrupt and the Fractal is a pattern... so Interrupt the Pattern. You can check us out at iFractal [dot] com. We have been lucky enough to be busy since the beginning. We have both been consulting in executing pay, communication of compensation, compensation, communication of difficult topics (M&As, RIFs), total pay, wellness, and so on. We work primarily with very large companies and with senior folks. Our work is mostly in the area of communication now – both print and electronic. We build lots of online comp tools and statements for employees and managers and HR tools and systems for HR and sometimes managers. These systems generally draw data from and interface with existing HRIS and/or ERP software. Our print work is more like advertising. In general, we are not the brochure people. We will do that if that is what clients want (though we try to offer alternatives because people don't tend to read brochures). We do fun, creative, and innovative print.
