Scott's Story

Life Hi; I'm still living in the country 6 miles south of Mason in a small town called Eden 20 miles south of Lansing in a turn of the century farmhouse with the old metal roofing. I'm hoping to sell the home and relocated to the small town of Webberville. Much closer to my job in New hudson (which is 65 miles from my home near Mason) but still close to Lansing. A small town with a golf course of around 1500 people where I can feel at home. I Graduated from MSU, 1985,1989 Bachelor of science degrees in Forensic Science and Psychology. Graduated with an MBA with a concentration in Industrial Management Dec 2001 from Baker College. I worked for Neogen Corp for almost 13 years in Lansing. 8 of them in Research and Development, developing Immunodiagnostic tests for agriculture, food and the environment. The rest of my time there was in Manufacturing ELISA's and Lateral flow devices. I was essentially a developmental biochemist there for many years as well as a supervisor. My job at Neogen disappeared Nov 2004. It's the old story of hard work, company loyalty and dedication over-looked for a cheaper bottom line on the balence sheet. After many years I was left with a severance package and legal papers to sign off on and out the door I went to find my next career with eyes wide open about the cold realities of the business world. I still support Neogen when I can and miss many of my friends and colleagues that I left behind. I left part of myself behind at that company as well as I helped build it and stayed to help it survive the many lean years so that it could be the success story that it is today. Many people were made millionaires over the success of that company. My next job I accepted in Feb 2005 at first it was a contract to hire position. Microbiologist/Field Scientist. Then it became a direct hire postion as of September 2005. I love my new job it is with a Norwegian company named Elopak, Inc. Many Norwegian people work here and the company headquaters is in Norway. My new title is Food Scientist. I've been fortunate to travel to Norway. my ancestors are Norwegian as some of you might remember. I was able to locate the areas where my ancestors came from in Ostre Toten Oppland Norway. An 80 acre farm off the lake there. I visited with a Helen Askegaard there (no relation) as her family took the farm over and therefore the farm name. Askegaard means Ash Tree Farm. I'm basically a technical service person we make machines that dispense milk, juice, yogurt, liquid egg. I travel to the customer sites and help make sure the machines are running correctly. I've been able to visit, Norway, Denmark, Netherlands(Holland), Mexico City, Montreal Quebec, NJ, and MN in the past year all work related. This new company is the best to work for and I feel at home working for the Norwegians. I got Married to the love of my life June 4th 2007. Caroline Stacey. She is the rector of St. Luke in the Fields Church in NY, NY. She is from England and has been in the states since the early 1990's. She received her bachelors and masters degrees from St. Andrews in Scotland and then went to div. School at Yale and got her Masters there as well. Needless to say I need to get out to NY. I she her 2 or 3 weekends a month while still working in MI and trying to sell the home. Hoping the job market opens up soon and my home sells soon as well then me and and my Jack Russell dog Queen can move to the mean streets of NYC. UPDATE: As of Dec 24th, 2007 I have moved to NYC...Expand for more
. I still have the home in Mason(crappy market), Will keep it and pay the mortgage for a while til the market rebounds or maybe keep it as a retirement and or vacation home. I live in Manhattan and work in Long Island about a 24 mile commute through the Mid-Town tunnel. I work for a company called Pall Corp. I'm a Research Scientist working on developing an ELISA test to detect Prions, to help validate there Prion Blood filter. Prions cause many diseases like Mad Cow. Anyway a commuter marriage for the first 6 months now living with my wife which is GREAT. I love being home with my wife every night. Up at 6 AM back by 7 PM. Queenie is use to NYC also and just the right size dog for the big city. So After I worked for Pall Corp for 8 years. Just over 4 years working in the Prion/Cell therapy and Blood labs then The blood business got bought out by Haemonetics Corp and we were laid off April 2012. I managed to get rehired at Pall working as a Micro-biologist and worked until Feb. 1,2016, Danaher Corp had bought Pall Corp in August 2015 and by Feb. 1, 2016 most of the 1000 people in the former Global Headquarters were laid off RIF. I managed to get a contract job as a Scientist working at the Siemens Tarrytown NY site in March 2016, By Sept. 2016 I had applied for a Biochemist 2 position working in R + D directly for Siemens was interviewed in October and offered the job in Late Nov 2016 . My first working day was Jan 3rd, 2017. I decided to started the first of the year to help my former Boss with setting up stability studies for a new ZIKA test that Siemens Healthineers was coming out with. Then started the new job fresh first working day of 2017. I am lucky to still be working in COVID times this update is in late Dec 2020. We have been able to WFH and stay employed over the COVID shutdowns and site population limitations... Queenie left us in late Sept. 2017 she was almost 16 years old we finally had the courage to get another Jack Russell, female puppy in June 2020 her name is patches and she is 8 months old now...This is mid Dec. 2020. And we still have the home in Mason. All fixed up and updated. A nice vacation home when it is not COVID times. NYC was the epicenter of that back in March 2020...We have been wearing KN95 masks since then. Staying safe. So we have made it thru Hurricane Sandy and COVID now. With Sandy I had already got a small 2000 watt generator, gas cans, cords tarp and ropes, small heater and a few other things to make it , if/when the city lost power. Irene in 2011 was the wake up call for me. I was ready when the power went off late October 2012. We had enough power for our fridge, lights, radio, small TV. Charge our cell phones and a small 800 watt heater if needed and it was needed. I had three 2..5 gallon gas cans full and we where out of power 1 week. We got lucky and got gas one time our first refill. We used the Generator during the day but not at night. Started it up every Day at 5 AM and off by 10 PM. We setup a lean to tarp to cover the generator to stay out of the rain tied to an iron fence out our back kitchen window. We are lucky to have a small backyard in the West Village as the city was dark for 1 week and the Cops were not around in that dark. So The Generator was in a gated backyard but taken in each night. We survived. May 10, 2021 Promoted to Senior Biochemist at Siemens-Healthineers in Tarrytown, NY. Patches is 13 months old now and a rebelliant teenager. Best Regards, Scott Askegard
