Scott's Story

I left Pettisville for Toledo in 1983, and got my Bachelor's Degree in Education from the University of Toledo in 1988. I was involved with Campus Crusade for Christ while at UT, and this profoundly impacted my views on God and spirituality. I also met my wife, Shari, while at UT, and we got married in 1989. I worked in several capacities in business after graduation. In 1994 we had our first son, David. At the pinnacle of my business career in Quality Management, I made a poor decision to leave a stable company and join a sinking ship, and after that my business career tanked! I reluctantly got into mental health, working with behaviorally and emotionally disturbed children and adolescents, in residential treatment. This put me on the road to becoming a therapist. After five years in front-line treatment as a staff member at a treatment center, I moved my family to Philadelphia. I pursued a Master's Degree in Counseling from Philadelphia Biblical University (Langhorne, PA) and worked in various capacities in mental health while living there. We also had an unexpected addition to our family, our second son, Matthew! I continued to do contractual work via the Internet for my former employer in Toledo, and upon graduation, the Exec Director offered to allow me to do my counseling internship on-the-job back in Toledo, while I pursued my license as a Professional Counselor (LPC). For the last year, we've been living in Perrysburg, Ohio and I've worked as a counseling intern for my former employer at the residential ce...Expand for more
nter near Liberty Center, Ohio. I plan to take the NCE this summer, to get my LPC license. After that, I hope to also create some private practice business on the side, and eventually open my own practice in Perrysburg doing explicitly biblical counseling (as opposed to traditional "secular" counseling in my day job). I'm an applicant to a PhD program in Counselor Education and Supervision at UT, and hope to start that work in fall 2009. Shari, David, Matt and I attend Westgate Chapel church. I still try to run, but the old body is not as resilient as it used to be. I've given up weight lifting for now (schedule problems) but used to be a die-hard body builder a few years back. I love to fly kites. I own a Jeep Liberty, and love to get out and drive with my boys and wife when we can go exploring country roads. We'd like to settle down in the Perrysburg area, buy an old historic home, and renovate it. Most important fact: I love the Lord and my life revolves around serving Him and becoming more like His Son. I'm trying to give my family a solid "coping model" of what a Christian should look like, and I live my life transparently before them and others to accomplish this. I love my wife and boys more than my own life! I believe all non-organically caused mental and emotional issues are essentially spiritual issues that need to be dealt with in the context of how one has chosen to relate to and trust God...which is why I want to build a practice in this area as a patently biblically-oriented mental health counselor.
