Scott's Story

Life After H.S., spent 6 years in the Submarine Service aboard USS Whale, homeported in Groton, CT. Made some interesting deployments in the North Atlantic, Mediterranean, Artic circle, and other undisclosed locations. Since then have been a commercial nuclear industry contractor performing maintenance planning, refueling outage planning, design change review, planning and implementation, field engineering, technical writing, project scheduling, and electrical testing. Have worked for several utilities located in: Connecticut, Vermont, Florida, Michigan, New Jersey, Arizona, and California. Currently working in Southern FL. School Mrs. Anderson was my kindergarten teacher at Barrie Elementary. Mrs. Quinn was my first grade teacher at Barrie Elementary where I met my first true love, Erin Ritter. She was beautiful. Second grade I was drunk most of the time. Mrs. Szalkowski was my third grade teacher at Rockwell Elementary, which I spent in a pair of perpetually taped-up, black rimmed, glasses (the die had been cast, apparently). Mr. Hinz was my fourth grade teacher at Rockwell Elementary, where I gave Cindy Brahman a black eye. (for the record, she had about 30 lbs. and 12 inches of reach on me.....). Sorry, Cindy. Fifth grade I was doing time up state. In sixth grade, The Emeroy Knights won the flag football championship; I played center, hiking the ball to Jack Deichl. Seventh, eighth, and ninth grades at J. F. Luther Jr. High was a lot of fun, except for band, which I quit. I shoulda stuck with it. Look at Wynton Marsallis now. Summer schools with Mr. Wannie and Mr. Kniert taught me to respect and love nature. Also, during that time I got my first shotgun for Christmas and proceeded to shoot up nature with Mark Mack, my cousin P. J. Lucas, George Purucker, and other accomplices. Tenth and a couple months of the eleventh grade I spent at Fort Atkinson High School wondering why I was so fascinated with Pam Ronan and Vicky Wollett. Then I moved to Florida and graduated from F.W. Springstead. I remember racial tensions ('bussing' was still being us...Expand for more
ed to 'integrate'), an all-school walkout to protest....something, and not being able to wrestle because our school didn't have a wrestling team. It also didn't have a gym. Upon graduation, our class, 90% of which were NOT from Florida, scattered. I'm finding that some of us are finding our way back to FL. I suppose I could use that as an excuse for the way I turned out, but the truth is, I've been ME all along.... College I tried college in 1990 as a 30-year-old freshman. I made the Dean's List and got a scholarship for another semester, but the pay wasn't what I was used to, so I decided to go back to work. I tried college again in 1993, but by then I had decided that I didn't really need that degree. So far, I've been right. Some things never cease to amaze me. Military The Navy was a very educational experience. I learned all kinds of things. Things which we don't talk about right now. I saw a little bit of the world and gained a deep, everlasting appreciation for the USA. Experienced some interesting situations. A submarine crew is basically divided into 2 parts, the engineering "nukes" or aft types, and the 'coners' "pukes" or fwd types. I was an engineering type who was fortunate enough (although I didn't think so at the time) to be assigned to the control room when doing our slinking and spying routines. If you read 'Blind Man's Bluff', you can get a pretty accurate picture of what used to go on. Probably still does. I learned that people were basically the same everywhere. Except all those foreigners. They don't speak english and they're just plain weird. And their money looks funny. I made some life-long friends in the Submarine Service. Friends I would do anything for, and who would do anything for me. Or so I like to believe. The nuclear navy gave me my present career, honed my already bizzare sense of humor, and instilled a little bit of pride for having served this great country. God bless America. Fortunately, I decided to get out before the 4 ex-wives and cirrhosis-riddled liver. Those were the days. I'm glad they're over.
